Music Oldies Rhythm n Blues, Porky Chedwick on the Radio - That's how we enjoyed our teen years!

Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, Beaver Valley, Aliquippa in the early 50's & 60's, a teenager had the greatest introduction to ROCK and ROLL OLDIES music. Some call it Rock and Roll, DooWop's, Rhythm and Blue's, Oldie's... there were many fabulous rock and roll groups that made the 50's and 60's an exciting time for music.

The radio stations around the area were playing ROCK and ROLL tunes hot off the presses. One OLDIES station in particular that I would listen to was 'WAMO' from Homestead, PA who's DJ was playing records right off the dusty shelves (DUSTY DISC'S). .

The DJ was "the BossMan, the Daddio-of-the-Radio, the Platter-Pushin-Poppa, Porky Chedwick. Porky Chedwick was the first white DJ to present a racially diverse audience in a major eastern American city a steady diet of what were, in the summer of 1948, called "RACE RECORDS."

The trail Porky Chedwick blazed with thousands of loyal fans was astounding --some 4 years before the more famous Pennsylvania native, Alan Freed, called the music "ROCK and ROLL". Chedwick's original playlist was comprised of OLDIES R&B and gospel records that he had collected over the years, making him the world's first bona fide OLDIES DJ. He called the records his "DUSTY DISC'S," since he would literally have to blow the dust off the 78s before he could preview them at the records stores. Record stores had no demand for the records and would often just give them to Porky Chedwick, or he'd rescue them from bargain bins with what little money he could scrape together. Years later, radio stations, record companies and concert promoters would take notice and copy the "Porky Chedwick Formula", creating the billion-dollar "OLDIES ROCK and ROLL" nostalgia industry which thrives still today.

"Any entertainers of my era who say 'they don't know who Porky Chedwick is' -
They're damn lyin'! That's the cat that played the records. I know!!!" - Bo Diddley

HOMETOWN ROCK and ROLL HALL DANCES.

"Memories Were Made of This". I remember like yesterday, the music and my friends.

How about the Rock and Roll dances you first went to as a young person. Perhaps it was a dance at a local school gymnasium or a hall that normally was reserved for weddings or parties..

Getting to a 'Dance Hall' was easy, we just went around the corner, down the street and walked right in. 'Linmar Hall' was our favorite haunt in those days (1950's). Lots of romances to remember, plenty of good times with friends. Who was seeing who and who was going to break up, who needed to be fixed up with who, in fact it was a great time for all of us Teenagers. I think of the good times often!

Did alot of "Weddng Crashing" at Linmar Hall. Especially liked the Italian Wedding receptions that would be held there. We would put our finest suits on and walk right in like we belonged. (just like in the movie "The Deer Hunter - Winner of five Oscars", starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and John Savage as three Pennsylvania steeltown friends whose lives are forever changed by their experiences together in Vietnam).

The wedding receptions were great, lots of wonderful food and many times it was all 'home cooked' . There always seemed to be flavored vodka's, I never knew there were so many ways to color vodka. The food was fabulous, good live music and plenty of dances with bride and bridemaid's (who we didn't even know, that's what wedding crashing is all about!!!).

If you look closely at the photo, behind Linmar Hall, there is a basketball court. So after the reception about 11PM, back to the basketball court we would go to continue our friday night out. "celebrate good times, come'on... it's a celebration"

Now, did I say we ate, danced and partied too much - or was it our "RIGHT of PASSAGE" thru the fabulous 50's?

Just 2 miles away from Linmar Hall was Jones and Lauglin Steel. It was a dirty and often times smelly period when the mill was going strong. At midnight, when the Blast Furnaces were running, the sky would light up like it was daylight. We would be out playing basketball then with no street lights, like it was daytime. Our dad's, brother's, sister's, friend's... all made their livings from J&L Steel.

Be sure and watch the video in the Section "BRINGING BACK ROCK and ROLL OLDIES MEMORIES". It shows the Steel Mills that were 2 miles from where I lived as a teenager."

Western Pennsylvania - ALIQUIPPA, PA.

not just any town, but my HOMETOWN - go QUIPS!

Aliquippa was founded by the merger of three towns: Aliquippa (now called West Aliquippa), Woodlawn, and New Sheffield. There is no evidence connecting the Seneca Queen Aliquippa with the location of the borough. This was one of several Indian names selected arbitrarily by the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad in 1878 for stations along the route. Aliquippa is best known as the location of a productive steel mill that the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company constructed there along the Ohio River beginning in 1905. Employment at the facility sustained a population of 27,023 in 1940. The mill closed during the collapse of the steel industry during the 1980s. This major economic loss alongside suburbanization caused a major population loss through the end of the 20th century. The oldest church without the current boundaries of Aliquippa is Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church (formerly White Oak Flats Presbyterian Church), established about 1793 in the New Sheffield region on Brodhead Road. Much of the city's businesses have left since the closing of the mill, which has left the area economically depressed. Recently, there have been small initiatives undertaken to help rejuvenate Aliquippa. In early 2008, Geneva College students were sent on a mission trip to help restore old buildings in the community. One structure that was successfully repaired now houses the Uncommon Grounds CoffeeShop.

The population of 15001 is 34,541.

That's #1942 out of all 42,305 zip codes.

86% of the population is white, which is 12 points more than the national average.

The average household income in 15001 is $37,130, which is $7,432 more than the typical average.

This contributes to the average house being worth $86,800. When the survey was done in 2000, that represented a difference of 10% from the typical value.

Men make up 47% of the population, and the typical age in this part of PA is 41.1.

Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, BB King, Fats Domino... ROCK and ROLL LEDGENDS

COMMENTS from many

"Where else can you see the Godfather talking to B.B. with Fats on the piano. Then, enter Jerry Lee and Little Richard. Mother of God this has to be the greatest spectacle that rock and roll could EVER PRODUCE!!! It gets no better than this my friends. And, it never will."

"music history 101.... "

"Thats not an All Star Meeting...Its a Legendary Meeting of Music Gods"

"What a show this must have been. Think I'll find Sherman and use the way back machine to go back to 1989. So much talent on one venue, not only those mentioned but also the immortal James Brown. The most surprising to me was to see Bo Diddley. Several others that I'm trying to remember on stage as well. One part shows James Brown with piano player other than Ray. Who is that?"

"What a fantastic video. We will never see the likes of this again. The only one missing was Chuck Berry whose ego wouldnt have allowed him to be on stage with the others. They were all the true kings of Rock and Roll."

"This is the most awe inspiring concert finale that I have ever seen. All of these music making legends performing on the same stage- phenomenal!! It's hard to believe that this concert took place about 20+ years ago, but I guess that's why we call them "legends". I can't get enough of this. Rock and Roll lives forever!!!"

Overheard Conversations in 1955

I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.

Have you seen the new cars coming out next year?  It won't be long before $2, 000.00 will only buy a used one.

If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.

Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter!.

If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems
every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.

I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .

Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.

I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.

It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.

Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes.

I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.

The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

There is no sense going to Pittsburgh or Philadelphia anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.

No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.

If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.

Mathis James "Jimmy" Reed (September 6, 1925 - August 29, 1976[1]) was an American blues singer notable for bringing his distinctive style of blues to mainstream audiences. Reed was a major player in the field of electric blues, as opposed to the more acoustic-based sound of many of his contemporaries. His lazy, slack-jawed singing, piercing harmonica and hypnotic guitar patterns were one of the blues most easily identifiable sounds in the 1950s and 1960s.
