Music Makers for Kids

Welcome to Music Makers

Kids love to make things and they love making music too. Here, they can do some of both.

When my daughter was in elementary school, some of things the kids made was their own musical instruments out of everyday products. She not only enjoyed making them, she enjoyed making music with them as well.

Here you'll find fun and unique low cost instruments to make and/or purchase.
May you and your kids have fun making music makers and some music.

The Shaker or your own Maraca

Maracas are musical instruments that are smooth on the outside, with a noisemaker on the inside. The music is made by shaking the instrument.

To make one at home, you'll need a plastic jar with a lid, small enough to get your hand around. Once the jar has been emptied, cleaned, and dried, add some grains of dried uncooked rice and then put the lid back on.

You can paint it and decorate it further if you like. You will then have your own home made maraca. Shake away!

Common everyday plastic jars can be a great choice for your homemade maracas.

Smaller jars work best for small hands, larger jars work best for larger hands.

It's great to re-use and recycle!

Homemade guitars

Making homemade guitars is great for starters and they're fun to play.

To begin with, you'll need an empty, family size, tissue box with a wide opening, and several large stretchy rubber bands. Try some various widths of rubber bands for different sounds.

You simply stretch the rubber bands around the empty tissue box, going across the opening where the Kleenex came out.

Feel free to decorate your guitar further by using markers and/or adding stickers.

Then strum away!

Recycle tissue boxes to make home made guitars

A tissue box with a wide center opening works best.

Recorder

My first purchased instrument as a child was a wooden recorder. My music teacher wanted every child in the class to have the experience of playing an instrument. Back then, (30+ years ago) the recorder I purchased cost $3.00. I still have mine today and play it occasionally. It's a fun instrument.

Make a Homemade Rain Stick

Rain sticks are instruments that sound like rain when you turn them from one end to the other.

To make one, you'll need a long cardboard tube (the kind that wrapping paper comes on), some uncooked dry rice, masking tape, some small wads of newspaper, and two cardboard circles cut to the size of the cardboard tube ends.

First, tape one of the circle pieces to one end of the tube. Insert a few of the wads of newspaper that are about half the width of the tub. Tape one of the ends shut with the cardboard circle. Then add the dry rice. Then temporarily hold the other end of the tube and listen to the sound the rice makes as you turn the tube from end to end. Decide if you need more or less rice and/or newspaper wads, and make any adjustments. Then tape the second cardboard circle in place over the tube end.

Then decorate your tube with construction paper and/or tempera paint.

Now you can enjoy a rain dance. : )

Here's a video with some different variations for making your own rain stick.
