Musical Adventures :: Edvard Grieg

Have you introduced your children to classical music and composer study? If not, I hope this lens will help to inspire you to do so. Edvard Grieg is was a Norwegian composer and pianist who composed in the Romantic period. He is best known for his Piano Concerto in A minor, for his incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (which includes Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King), and for his collection of piano miniatures, Lyric Piece

In our home, we began our study of classical music with a brief introduction to his music with Themes to Remember. A humorous application of lyrics to help young children remember not only the name of the composer, but the title of the piece as well. We then dived into a study of Grieg by reading biographies, locating his country on a map, creating a notebooking page, and of course listening to his music whenever possible.

Let the music of Grieg fill your home as you introduce your family to this master.

Music is magical, and classical music is especially so. Children, especially, become very excited when they hear classical music on the TV, radio, computer--all around them--and can tell you what is being played and who composed it! They love the humorous illustrations and lyrics in "Themes To Remember." Learning is joyful and exciting. This learning system is unique, tested, and amazingly effective. Learn by singing along with Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and the rest of the best!

Troldhaugen :: Grieg's Home in Bergen

In May of 2011, we had the wonderful opportunity to visit Troldhaugen, the home of Nina and Edvard Grieg. Built in 1885, the couple lived there the last 22 summers of Edvard Grieg's life. In May of 1928, Troldhaugen became a museum. After WWII, permanent employees were hired to manage and operate the museum which then consisted of the villa, the composer's hut and the gravesite. In 1985 the concert hall, Troldhalen, was inaugurated and in 1995 the museum building opened. We enjoyed the permanent exhibit in the latter, purchased a CD of Grieg's music performed by and spent a little time exploring the grounds and original buildings.

    Mom - Can you record me playing the troll song on the piano and then you can put it on here?

    Oh yes, we love In The Hall Of The Mountain King, but I'll have to say that Strauss is a bigger favour here, with the Blue Danube being at the top of the list. We fully intend to bring our little one to the BBC Proms next year, since we already live in London.

Grieg Concert Hall

Troldhalen, the concert hall on the grounds of the Grieg home, was opened in 1985. In the summer months, concerts with famous piano music of Edvard Grieg are held every day at 13:00 from 7 June-30 September.
