Great Clothing for Muslim Shopping

Inner Beauty Displayed in Clothes for Muslims

Character is foremost when persons dress for modesty. Persons of many religions choose clothing with a high regard for how it provides modest body covering, over style (and seduction) alone. In the contemporary world, in movies and on television, the premium is paid for clothing that reveals the body.

Our young girls are commercialized, and guided towards the Barbie and Britney look. Great Clothing for Muslims provides a huge selection of information and online shops for the whole family.

As a new convert it was nearly inconceivable that I would ever wear "the whole thing" - floor length covers the likes of which our Somali sisters wear. It was hard enough to wear a tiny square scarf tied behind my head. Of course I was going through chemo at the same time as I began to think seriously about wearing a larger scarf. For the first eight months I settled for the small scarf, with a fabulous cotton knit brimmed hat over it.

Eventually Ramadan came and I wanted to pray in a masjid, so I wrapped and wrapped one of my favorite long long scarves. I didn't get the knack and used all sorts of pins, including hair clips to keep the scarf flat over my forehead, and angled down over my ears. Friendly sisters showed me how to do it up good. Finally I cut and sewed that scarf into a sort of square that I could manage dependably, and felt proud of myself.

My wardrobe contained many long loose skirts and long tops, so I made do with them for a decade. Oh, one very short sister gave me her castoff jilbab, and believe it or not, I wore that garment over some of my favorite full and festive long skirts until the side seams gave out - mostly as a utilitarian cover-up.

Now my closet is filled with American style clothing, with the occasional jilbab and tunic. photo from commons.wikimedia.org

Clear Explanations of Modest Dressing

In Islam there are four major schools of thought that clarify the practice of the religion. The type of modest dressing for Muslim Women and Muslim Men is called Hijab, and the headscarf is also called hijab. Many styles of headcoverings have developed over the centuries.

While an Iranian Woman, such as the one shown here, may tie a large square scarf under her chin in a mode common in her culture, many women in other regions wear a one-piece knit garment that hugs the head and has a forehead piece sewn-in, for ease of wearing.

Long rectangular scarves are typically wrapped over the head and hair twice and pinned in strategic places to keep them in place. The normal hijab is opaque, but if semi-transparent scarves are worn they are often added over an under-cap as a finishing touch, and when they are worn alone, the multi-layers make them opaque.

Muslim women dress in as many different styles as can be found in the secular world. It is the degree of coverage to which Muslim women respond, usually choosing to cover the entire body, with the exception of the face and hands.

Hijab is the Arabic word that refers to both the headscarf or other head covering, as well as to the entire covering. For instance, a woman may wear a deep crowned hat or cap with a turtleneck top. With that she may wear a long, full or a-line skirt, with a long full scarf wrapped around the neck.

She may draw a beautiful shawl around her shoulders, so it also covers her bosom. Some Muslim women wear slips under jumpers, over which they pop on a tunic or other cotton shirt. Muslim women also opt for pants, slacks or jeans, and the norm is to cover the crotch, so the woman can assume the prayer position of 'sadja', where she prostrates herself, over her folded knees, so the garments still cover the upper parts of her legs.

Different cultures have adopted different styles of hijab, depending on their region. In the Western World it is common to wear a wide variety of styles drawn from Muslim cultures, as well as from contemporary fashion found at the mall.

As Islam came to be practiced over the years, four main schools of Islamic Law formed, and within them some others, that govern the application of religion, to dress requirements.

The question remains over the rigors to which especially women's dress must be scrutinized. Scholars tend to disagree over the fine points, such as whether to cover the face, and the hands, and the feet. But the majority hold that both men and women should wear loose clothing that most often requires the covering of the hair. Some require the wearing of gloves, and arm covers under loose sleeves, and socks on the feet. I am not here to judge, but to present some options.

Most Muslim women wear clothing that is not form fitting to the body: either modest forms of western clothing (long shirts and skirts), or the more traditional jilbab, a high-necked, loose robe that covers the arms and legs. A khimar or shaylah, a scarf or cowl that covers all but the face, is also worn in many different styles.

Some scholars encourage covering the face, while some follow the opinion that it is only not obligatory to cover the face and the hands but mustahab (Highly recommended). Other scholars oppose face covering, particularly in the west where the woman may draw more attention as a result. These garments are very different in cut than most of the traditional forms of dress, and they are worn worldwide by Muslims.

Detailed scholarly attention has been focused on prescribing female dress. Many Muslims believe that the basic requirements are that when in the presence of someone of the opposite sex (other than a close family member (those which are within the prohibited degrees of marriage) - see mahram), a woman should cover her body, and walk and dress in a way which does not draw sexual attention to her.

In private, and in the presence of mahrams, the rules on dress are relaxed. However, in the presence of husband, most scholars stress the importance of mutual freedom and pleasure of the husband and wife. More information on garments and men's dress. en.wikipedia.org

Muslim women wear a tremendous variety of styles, and I don't want to add to stereotypes by implying that to dress like a muslim woman, is to wear niqab, or to look as if I came from Indonesia (although I would be proud if this were true.

I would also be proud of coming from Norway like most of my father's family did, or from Argentina, or from Italy, for example), or to look like I must dress the way women do in Somalia, but if I choose to dress in Somali style, there is also nothing wrong with that.

As you can see from this selection, I would wear this tunic too. I like the fact that it is semi-sheer, and I would layer it over a very thin long-sleeved top, if the sleeves are not lined. I would wear it over a camisole, at home. I could wear it out in public over a skirt, with a large scarf wrapped around the neck and over the shoulders.

The main point is that as muslim women, we are free to make our own clothing selections. Since I'm from a northern climate I still prefer the same types of American clothing I grew into adulthood with, unless I'm in a hot climate.

I've always loved the feel of long skirts and pants loosely falling against my leg - convenient for me, since long loose clothing provides a modest presentation to the public.

At the same time I occasionally appreciate a more tailored look and that is when I choose a North American garment. Often, though, I wear the same clothes that other North American women wear, but my clothes are looser fitting than some of my neighbors wear.

Muslim Women Cover the Body with Grace

Muslim women tend to cover the entire body, leaving only the face and hands visible, for modesty sake. Designs are independent of the secular fashion dictates. Women's clothing does not resemble men's styles. Looseness prevents the fabric describing the individual body. Muslims enjoy clothing styling yet aim not to raise their worldly status through appearances, remembering that modesty rules out pride.

The Best Online Shopping for Niqab

American Niqab

Several styles of niqab accommodate all tastes. It's common for niqabis (women who wear niqab) to wear all-black clothing, but some women choose all brown, or beige, or grey, or a mixture of shades and colors.

Shown here is a beige loose garment that covers the head in one-piece, topped by a separate black veil. Typically the veil has tabs or ribbons that fasten in the back of the head.

The slit-opening for the eyes has a fabric, ribbon, or cord strip over the bridge of the nose, dividing the opening into two pieces, for the eyes, although some slits are one opening for both eyes.

Another option is a knit hijab complete with sewn-in face cover that extends up over the cheeks, joining the forehead cover where they meet at the corner of the eyes. The knit veiling is versatile, in that it can be opened or narrowed, as the need for covering varies.

Stylish Hijabs Plus Shopping & Styling Tips

The year I converted to Islam was the same year I had breast cancer, and chemo took my hair. I sometimes wore small square scarves, tied bandana style - or one of several long rectangles (especially scrunchy ones), to keep wind out of my ears, prior to becoming Muslim. I used them during treatment, after I became bald, and usually always topped the scarf off with some type of hat.

When I finally learned the arts of wearing a scarf, my head covering wardrobe grew and I learned pinning tricks from other Muslims. The day this photograph was shot I had taken another Muslim friend to visit my mother. Since it was bright and sunny we all wore sun hats when we walked down to the waterfront with our pencils and drawing tablets.

Enjoying ourselves, we didn't even notice the photographer who was already in position when she asked permission to take our photograph. She represented the daily newspaper in a neighboring city and the next day the large photo titled "Three Sunhats" appeared in the newspaper.

I like this versatile abaya. It does dual duty, and since it is wrinkle-resistant, it goes from summer to winter easily, as it is unlikely to wrinkle under a heavy winter coat.

This stunning abaya includes a complimentary hijab. Closer fitting at the top, the sleeves flare a bit at the wrist, matching the styling for the bodice.
