The Story of My Dog Oiya

My Dog Oiya

Oiya came into my life ten years ago as a three-year old.Her previous owner could no longer look after her as he was moving into an apartment and he had heard that I was looking for a dog to adopt.
Perfect!

Oiya is a Staffy, Kelpie and Labrador cross and an apartment is no place for a large, active working dog like her that requires regular exercise and a big back yard at best.
I could provide this for her, the space and love she needed and so her stay with her new family began.

You may be wondering why the name Oiya, well I will attempt to explain.
Her previous owner didn't really name her at all but use to use the name 'oi' when calling her or giving her a command so ' oi ' became her name as a puppy and remained so until she came to live with us.

I was out in the park with her one day when I heard myself calling her back with the name 'oi' in a strong tone and I suddenly became very embarrassed and concerned about how awful that sounded "how Australian is that !" I thought, so the name was changed adding a' ya' at the end making it into Oiya not to confuse the dog too much but for her name to sound a little special.

Is it that I am a snob or is it that a dog should have some kind of dignity associated with a name, as we do? Probably a bit of both.

And so this began Oiya's life with us as part of the family.Over ten years ago now. She is a much older dog, greying around the mouth, as they do and generally slowing down but still is as loving, protective and loyal as ever.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier ( not to be confused with The American Pit Bull terrier ) is a well built, stocky medium sized dog with a broad head, thick neck and deep chest, the body contours of this English breed.

They can have black, brindle, white or reddish tan coats

They are an extremely affectionate, devoted and loyal dog and at one stage were nicknamed 'The Nanny Dog ' as they have such a close bond to with their family and a love of children.

These dogs can sometimes be aggressive toward other dogs especially if they are an unneuted male, this is about their only down side, so desexing is a must in order for the dog to have an even temperament.

The Kellpie

The Kelpie is an Australian working sheep dog that is used to muster sheep and cattle on farming properties around Australia and has been exported overseas to be used in a similar capacity to muster live stock.

They are a medium sized dog usually coming with a reddish brown coat 'Red Cloud Kelpies' and sometimes black with tan.

They are a very intelligent, active dog that loves to work and if kept as a family pet should have extensive training with loads of regular exercise.

The Ladrador Retriever

The Labrador is a medium sized gun dog which has a short golden or black coat.
They are an extremely affectionate, gentle and good natured dogs.

Because of their lovely natures they can be good companions for people of all ages as they have a high level of patients and tolerance, so are good with both the elderly and children thus making them an ideal family dog.

They are an intelligent dog that loves to work and is easily trained and are often used as a guild dog for the blind and for those who are are challenged in other ways and in need of assistance.

Helene-Malmsio says:

Yes, Bella Ella recently departed, but Casper the friendly white ghost is still here being a hooligan!

annrhi says:

We rescued a Catalan Sheepdog last year. Like Oiya no one had bothered to give her a proper name, just called her Moo, a corruption of her pedigree name, We were NOT standing in the park, or anywhere else, yelling 'Moo!' And it didn't seem fair to our lovely girl not to have a real name, she almost became Alice but then we settled on Lulu - and Lulu is about to star in her own lens, to introduce people to this wonderful but little known Spanish breed.

Nice lens, enjoyed meeting Oiya, she's a lovely girl

An Elderly Oiya

Oiya is now thirteen years old and has slowed down considerably over the last few years .
When she was a fit and active dog of three she would not be satisfied with just the one or two walks a day( thats the Kellpie in her ) but would seem to want to go on and on forever even when she had been out and about to the park, up to the shops she would always want more.

One of our most favorite walks we used to go on was along the Moonee Ponds creek. We could walk for miles and get lost in the surrounding bush.We still go on this one sometimes it is a really good work out for oiya and myself.

We go for walks as much as possible even if it is just for a short one around the block to get the smells and some fresh air depending on what the weather brings and this seems to satisfy her exercise needs now as she seems happy when we are heading back for home.

She is a loving, protective, loyal dog,my constant companion and with a bit of luck she will be with us for a while yet.
