CAIPS means Computer Assisted Immigration Processing System. It is the computer system used by Canadian visa offices, Embassies and Consulates around the world to process and track overseas visa applications.

If you feel that there has been an unusually long time since you last heard from the visa office, you might want to get your CAIPS file to understand what the current status of your application is. Sometimes obtaining a CAIPS file following an unusual delay reveals a problem such as a letter or document, or request from CIC for some additional information, that has gone missing or been sent to an outdated address. CAIPS notes will give you precise and clear explanations on the following issues:

- The current status of your application and required documents (received or not, valid or invalid, etc) - Visa officer's comments on your case (including missing documents or pending verifications)

- Questions that you will be asked in the interview (if an interview is required)

- Status of your medical examination (passed, failed or requested to attend additional examination)

- Clear understanding and possibility to estimate the time frame for finalization of your application and visa issuance
