My Pet Cats

As far back as I can remember there have always been cats in my life. When I was growing up there were always a cat around the house and sometimes kittens too. My brother and I used to love playing with the kittens, they were so cute and cuddly. We often had dogs too, but thats another story. Later on when I got married and we bought our first house, the first thing we did was to go out and buy a kitten. Her name was Kinky!

My Cat Story

my cat kinky

Kinky was a tortoise shell female cat and she was so lively and funny. She used to dash round the house and do cartwheels and her tail would go all kinky (hence her name). My parents lived a 10 minute walk away and when we visited them we would always take Kinky with us. My husband just used to carry her in his arms and she seemed to love it. My mum was cool with us bringing the kitten round but my dad wasn't too keen but he was ok about it in the end.

When she got bigger we had to stop taking her. Some time later we decided to get another cat to keep Kinky company so we bought a male cat, he was white with black patches and a bit grumpy so we called him "Boss". He wasn't as lively as Kinky and seemed quite lazy by comparison.

The Cats Call A Truce

my cat boss

When we first bought Boss home, Kinky got a little bit jealous. I suppose it was only natural, she had been the centre of attention, getting all the fuss and now she had be unsurped by this "runty" little kitten! She looked at him with distain and sulked for days. Boss was so small and his tail was really thin like a little pigs tail. I remember I lifted his tail to look at it and he gave a great big angry meow. When he got a little older his tail did eventually become thick and bushy.

We used to have all these little cat toys, a squeaky mouse, a plastic ball etc and used to try and get Boss to chase them and play. He used to get hold of the ball in his mouth and walk around growling and after a while he got tired and went to sleep. Kinky on the other hand would chase around and play for hours on end, even when she was an older cat.

My Cat is Full of Surprises

Our Beautiful Kittens

kinky's kittens

Shortly after we got Boss, we noticed that Kinky was putting on weight and it suddenly dawned on us that she was expecting kittens! What a shock! Boss was too young to be the father, he was still barely a kitten himself. So we made preparations, made Kinky's cat bed all nice and cosy and when the time was near we put her bed in the cupboard under the stairs so she could have some privacy. She seemd to approve of her bed in the cupboard and started to sleep there.

Then one day when the birth was imminent, Kinky decided to stay outside for the night, nothing we could do would persuade her to come inside. We were worried but Kinky stubbonly refused to come in the house. Boss stayed outside too.

The next morning when we got up, just outside the backdoor, there was Kinky and 4 tiny kittens and sitting next to her looking like a proud father was Boss, watching over them all. Kinky gave a big purr of pride and I scooped her and the kittens up and put them in her bed under the stairs. The kittens looked so cute - two black kittens with white markings, a beautiful marmalade kitten and a dark brown kitten with big panda eyes. When they were a bit older and starting to walk around, we feel in love with them and wanted to keep them all! They were such lovely kittens. Of course keeping the kittens was never an option and when they were weaned we found good homes for them all and reluctantly said our sad goodbyes to them.

I Love My Cats

I love animals and especially cats, they are always there for you and love you unconditionally and they don't judge you. Kinky was very affectionate and she used to love cuddling up on my lap and when she was a kitten she used to love sucking my jumper! I always seemed to have a soggy jumper so when she got a bit older I had to stop her from doing it.

She was so special to me because she was the first cat I ever had that was mine and loved me the most. Does that sound childish? When I lived with my parents all our cats loved my mum the best and I was so sort of tolerated (as a child), but with Kinky because we got her as a kitten she grew up in our home and loved me the best because I was her "mummy".

My Cats Big Day Out

A Trip to the Vets Gone Wrong!

One day we decided that it was time for Kinky and Boss to visit to the vets to ensure there were no more suprise kittens. My husband at the time was working shifts so he was going to take them to the vets while I was at work.

When I finished work my husband was waiting outside for me looking very upset. He said he had some bad news. I was really scared and wondered what on earth had happened. Apparently on the way to the vets about a 15 minute walk away from the house, the cats had made a getaway! Boss was very strong and had somehow managed to burst out of the cardboard cat carrier they were being carried in and both cats had jumped out and made a mad dash for freedom! My husband said he had tried to catch them but they had just vanished and despite running round the streets looking for them, he just could not find them anywhere.

I was so upset and devastated, all the way home I was imaging all sorts of horrors and mishaps that could have befallen our two cats. I imagined them wandering the streets, lost and cold and hungry or worse still, I pictured them being run over by a car or a lorry. When we arrived home I just burst into tears. I couldn't imagine life without our beloved Kinky and Boss.

I went outside into the garden and would you believe it - there was Kinky and Boss sitting in the garden as though nothing had happened. What? I called my husband to come and look. We were stunned - How on earth did they find their way home? Cats are mysterious creatures with sixth sense and our two clever cats had found their way home. We were so relieved and overjoyed! "Lets celebrate" we cried - "Cat treats all round!"

By the way, Kinky and Boss didn't get out of a visit to the vets. This time we borrowed a sturdy cat carrier from the vets and they were taken in a taxi!

P.S. My Catless Life

Almost But Not Quite Catless

Tabitha

Kinky lived a very long and happy life, she was almost 20 when she died. One day we found her in the garden, she had just gone to sleep. She loved the garden so we buried her at the bottom of the garden where she loved to sit and bask in the sunshine.

Boss unfortunately did not live as long. We found out he had a heart defect and despite treatment and medication from the vet, he only lived until the age of six. One fine sunny day he was in the garden laying under his favourite tree, when he suddenly sat up, gave a loud meow and passed away. We buried him under his favourite tree. Kinky really missed him. She walked round the house for weeks meowing and looking lost.

Today I no longer have any pet cats. I used to live in London but I now live in the beautiful countryside of Suffolk in England. Our garden is a haven for wild birds, we love to watch them, feed them and photograph them so a pet cat is out of the question.

My partner's daughter Louise has a cat called Tabitha (that's a photo of Tabitha) she is so friendly and when we visit she usually jumps on my lap for a cuddle. So I am not quite completely catless!

This is Ben another of Louise's cats who is sadly no longer with us. Apparently he hated men and would only tolerate women. Just look at that stare - scary or what!

This is just a friendly cat we spotted one day and who seemed happy to pose for a photo. Such a pretty pussycat!

I love your photos. And that story about Kinky and Boss making a run for it and then finding their way home reminds me of when I was a child, and our cat, Willie, ran away when we tried to catch him when we were about to move across town. He didn't return, and we had to go. I was devastated. Somehow--don't ask me how--he found us at our NEW home two years later! And he'd never been there! He came in the house and slept on my chest that night, just as he always had. So weird.

Does Your Cat Have A Behaviour Problem?

Complete Cat Training
Will Solve Your Cat's Behaviour Problems

Cat Behaviour Problems

Train Your Cat

We were very luck with Kinky and Boss they were always well behaved and we never had any major problems with them. They never messed in the house (except for a couple of accident when they were kittens), they never scratched the furniture or clawed the carpets, never jumped on tables or work surfaces and were never aggressive.

One of my friends complained about her cats, scratching the furniture and climbing up curtains and other friend complained that her cat was always jumping on the table or kitchen surfaces and trying to steal food. I guess we were just lucky.
