100 days to Fitness: My personal goal

Today, January 13, 2012 - I start this 100 day challenge again! Where am I today? Well, I am recovering from a surgery to remove implants from a double- mastectomy. The double-mastectomy - and my beloved chemotherapy :) - cured the cancer, but I am still dealing with other health problems. I have high blood pressure, and my weight is still up - 186 pounds as of today. I am out of shape, and weirdly at this point I am prohibited from strenuous exercise - as part of the recovery from the plastic surgery I am not supposed to "work up a sweat." NOTHING HAS INSPIRED ME TO GO TO THE GYM AS MUCH AS BEING PROHIBITED FROM DOING IT. The most alarming part of my reality is that my lung capacity feels restricted. My older sister had a mastectomy a few years ago, and now she is walking around with the lungs of a smoker - even though she has never smoked. I was hoping if the implants were removed I would be able to breathe better, but that is frightening not the case. I am inspired not to have to drag oxygen around. I don't know if there is much I can do about that, but I am willing to try. I was also inspired by the youtube video of Dr. Terry Wahl - and her amazing recovery from multiple sclerosis through diet. I am starting again - and just doing what I can! Today -if I cannot break a sweat I pledge to take 3 short walks, and somehow get some green leafy vegetables into my home to eat.

Today, September 23, 2009 is the beginning of the last 100 days of the year - and the beginning of my health and fitness challenge.

Correction - May 21, 2010 is the beginning of the rest of my life - and again I start a health and fitness challenge!

And I'm still here by the end of the month too!

My initial goal was to be fitter by the end of 2009. Cancer, major, major surgery and chemotherapy derailed those plans.

I have just finished ( yesterday) my fifth dose of chemotherapy. Chemo is gross.

But life is great.

Please join with me in this new fitness plan, as I join spiritually with you as you accomplish all your goals.

PS - March 5, 2012 - Well, I'm still here on this planet! I have completed what I hope to be the last surgery in regards to my breast cancer - removal of implants that didn't work out. I am living with mastectomy scars. :( I hope as time goes on I am able to reconcile with this - and become more physically confident.

I was pretty debilitated from the surgery, and had to limit activity. I am now building up my strength. I want especially to build up my lungs which I think are the indicators of general health.

I am loving the gym! My 100 day fitness challenge has become a 365 day a year, life long fitness challenge.

I did it! I started this 100 day challenge

How I plan to lose weight, get fit, and feel as good as possible by the end of the year!

First of all I don't do very well if I am told not to do something. Even if this is in my benefit sometimes I can get very rebellious. So I am going to do this challenge by taking some positive steps:

Every Day I am Aiming to

1. Eat five fruits and a vegetable salad.

2. Eat a good breakfast.

3. Take my dog - "Buckwheat" - for a short walk before I have my latte. Walk the dog!

4. Eat a healthy breakfast.

5. Get at least twenty minutes of aerobic exercise.

6.Participate in the program laid out by Jorge Cruise: 8 Minutes in the Morning: A Simple Way to Shed Up to 2 Pounds a Week -- Guaranteed

7. Get some more sleep!

8. Live the day in Gratitude

So I am going to do all kinds of other good stuff, but my goal is to do all the 8 steps everyday.

There is an urgency now - I am facing a health challenge

Yesterday I had bad news

Two years ago I had breast cancer and got a clean bill of health. Yesterday I left my radiologist with a copy of I Flunked My Mammogram!
Yes, the doctors had detected cancer - this time in the other breast. I am considering radical surgery, and I am continuing with my search to become as healthy as possible.

Did I make all the right choices for my health in the past to lead up to this? Probably not. Did the doctors miss the spot earlier when I went through the lumpectomy and radiation for the first spot? Possibly. I do not know. I only know that everyone did their best at the time with the consciousness they had, and that I need to go on to make a bright future - and a bright present. That is what the radiologist said to me when I said that the diagnosis made me appreciate life more - "it makes things brighter."

My cancer was detected in a routine mammogram and ultrasound, and I am grateful that I have coverage. You can help by clicking at The Breast Cancer Site everyday on the button below - the advertisers will donate to a fund that makes it possible for low income women to receive mammograms.

Accepting a challenge while I walk through a valley - October 14, 2009

I am struggling to keep balance. I look at all that I had aimed for in the beginning and it seems too impossible. I wish I had done more, although blame is not really appropriate here. I almost feel like giving up. What is the use now?

Today I read about obsessive dogs, which I surely have with Buckwheat and the ball. The author said that dogs become less obsessive if they have a routine. I am trying to establish a routine for both of us. The hardest part is having an active morning, since I work evening shift and sometimes get home after 1AM.

But I did have my apples, salad and squash. :)

85 Days into this challenge - Did I accomplish anything?

How fit can you become if you are battling cancer?

a woman receiving chemo - with cooling blankets to hep decrease some of the side effects Well the year has not gone as I have planned that is for sure. After my surgery, I have had to start chemotherapy, and this was my very first day. I always said that I would not go through chemotherapy, but there we go.

It appeared that it was the best solution for my situation.

How can I become fit when three weeks ago when 6 weeks ago I could not get out of bed without assistance from the hospital bed, a wedge or another person? How when I took my first walk to the filling station I was so happy, enjoying the cool air and the stretching of my legs, but I had to spend the next day in bed due to the pain? I am doing it one day at a time.

Now, I can take a walk without being in so much pain. Even on rough days I can practice deep breathing and bring oxygen to every cell of my body. And I also practice sending love to every cell of my body, and seeing it as whole. I have continued upping my intake of vegetables and fruits, and found a great article of eating during chemotherapy that I am following. I had a lovely kale dish from there that I would have never tried before. I ground up the extra kale into Buckwheat's "soup" so my dog could enjoy the antioxidants. I also purchased a wonderful raw ginger cake from a restaurant called "Cafe Gratitude" in Berkeley. It was called "I am mighty" and I felt mighty eating it. I am going to chemo every three weeks, and I am going to have a routine to go to Cafe Gratitude the day before and pick up that ginger cake, and have their dish called "I am grateful" that I can purchase for a dollar. A healthy alternative to fast food, and an energizing hablit to get into before chemo.

In other words I am refusing to give up.

And I hope that in your challenges, even if they are some really hard ones - you refuse to give up as well.

Exercise - the natural antidepressant

Yesterday I discovered first hand why I need to exercise daily - it is a natural antidepressant. After spending a few hours in bed, feeling crushed down by a depression, I decided to go to the gym and work out on the glider for twenty minutes. Voila! Even though I still don't know the purpose of my life, and feel like it is getting me down sometimes, the endorphans released felt lifesaving.

Today, I again "just did it," with similar results.

I Am a Water Baby!

I have found my true exercise - Aquasize

water exercising Navy December 2012 I discover that I am a water baby! I put on a floatation belt and either run or walk in the water. Unless I am very tired I can go longer at this exercise than any other, and I will acheive muscle relaxation and sleep like a baby every time I go to the pool. What works for me the best is putting my swim suit in the car and then going to the club immediately after work. I will pass my door by and want to turn it, but I don't. I then shower, and leave all my work worries at the pool - I don't take them home. I get into a lull, and then almost into a trance.

My mood is ALWAYS helped by this! Exercise truly is a natural mood elevator.
