The Seven Faces of Women
Ranked #10,664 in Culture & Society, #213,449 overall
Why have one wife when you can have seven?
Leigh is my champion, my hero and my best friend. Not only is she proud of my achievements, but she also puts her family ahead of herself, most often to the detriment of her own health.
Despite having lupus and having had two bouts of breast cancer, she is a rock in our lives and is the foundation that keeps me sane. As I look at her I realize that she's not actually one wife - there's at least seven wives all rolled into one!
This Lens attempts to describe each of these wives:
"If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base." Dave Barry
My Wife: Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe has been ranked as the sixth greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute. She epitomizes the glamorous qualities a woman can hold; her almost innocent demeanor combines well with her subtle sensuality to bring forth her womanly wiles. All women have this ability; it's a subtle weapon in their arsenal not only designed to attract man, but also as a shot across the bow for other women. This sensual nature of a woman is an alluring disposition that entices all men.
"Sure God created man before woman. But then you always make a rough draft before the final masterpiece." Unknown Author.
My Wife:Rosie the Riveter
The original WOW was not World of Warcraft, but was Woman Ordnance Workers. Woman Ordnance Workers were the backbone of the War Effort in World War II in the USA. They took jobs that normally were done by man, and with their icon Rosie the Riveter, they proved that not only could women do a man's job but they could excel at it. While the icon is considered a feminist icon, it epitomizes the struggles and tribulations of women throughout the ages; it also shows the triumph of women against the odds. Many consider this to be a man's world, but there's no doubt that women are proving this wrong and in time it will be a Woman's World.
"Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult." Charlotte Whitton
My Wife: The Cheerleader.
Cheerleading, in its purist form is a sport with many gymnastic elements. However, on a broader level a woman is a masterful cheerleader; she's the one who really encourages the children with their homework, with their artistic abilities or their sporting prowess. No matter how good or bad they are, the mother is always the one cheering them on and holding up a flag of honor. Her abilities to get the best out of her children as well as her husband is renowned; it just goes to show that the saying 'behind every great man is a great woman' is true, for the mother has always been there to hold the hand of the child that became the great man.

In your eyes
by Simon Cook
In your eyes,
I see the reflections of my soul;
not sordid and deceitful,
as I understand it,
but as a snow flake,
delicate and beautiful.
In your words,
I feel the inflection of your love;
not the deceit and denial,
I believe I deserve,
but as a mountain,
resolute and eternal.
In your actions,
I feel the warmth of your embrace;
not to smother or drown me,
in my melancholy,
but as a blanket,
loving and secure.
In your dreams,
I discover the gates of heaven;
not to deny my entry,
as I surely deserve,
but as a sanctuary,
for my emotions.
In your arms,
I find my protection;
not to hide from life,
as I want to,
but as a platform,
for my rebirth.
In your eyes,
I find my salvation.
"A woman can say more in a sigh than a man can say in a sermon." Arnold Haultain
My Wife: The Caregiver
Caregiver really doesn't do justice to what women cope with. From colds, coughs, scrapes and bumps, right up to looking after elderly relatives, a woman excels in care giving; she has the ability to sympathize, empathize and calm even the most belligerent of patient. Her patience is never ending, as is her soft touch and ability to find the right words when needed. She is a nurse, a psychologist and a physiotherapist all rolled into one; she's been using a magic sponge far longer than any sports trainer.
"Can you imagine a world without men? No crime and lots of happy fat women." Nicole Hollander
My Wife: The Warrior
Threaten anyone in a woman's family and you'll see an amazing transformation. A woman is the human equivalent of a Chihuahua; she's really a Samurai in a demure body. A woman will come out of the corner fighting, all guns blaring; there's no compromise once she starts for her family must be defended at all costs. This ability to protect one's own with such fierceness, is in complete contrast to her normal demeanor. They say "Hell has no fury like a woman scorned", but this fury is tame compared to a woman whose family is in danger.
"They call it PMS because Mad Cow Disease was already taken." Author Unknown
My Wife: The Cleaner, Cook and Bottle Washer
Ask many men and they'll tell you that Women are only good for washing and making babies; they say it with scorn. However, cooking, cleaning and bottle washing is a full-time job, that many women do despite also working a full time job during the day.
Cleaning up after children (and Husbands) not only helps the house look nice, but has a more important role; safety - keeping a clutter free house stops accidents; cleaning ensures that germs cannot spread and the family is healthy. Providing a decent meal for the family not only ensures some quality time together but also keeps the family fit. This is the most under-rated jobs in the world, and while modern man is assisting with the chores, woman deserve the accolades and really deserve to be paid for this fundamental service.
"A woman should soften but not weaken a man." Sigmund Freud
Home
by Simon Cook
Sunlight glimmers through windswept trees,
as leaves rustle to the gentle tune,
of a bard playing a soft lullaby.
Memories of the days,
of merriment and love,
carry me through these evil times.
Laughter is caught on the wind,
like butterflies of joy,
floating through the cool shade.
As I forge ahead.
fighting the fatigue of battle;
your essence fortifies me.
Birds, riding the eddies of excitement,
add their own voices to the melody;
their harmonies blending sublimely.
As despair's tendrils,
reach out and destroy my soul,
I yearn for your healing touch.
Bark-covered limbs encompass me;
a silent hug protecting their brood,
from an unknown disorder.
Pain shatters me;
my bones are torn asunder;
you are but a candle in the dark.
Animals, seeking the innocent games of children,
chase their tails in merriment,
their lively dance like flames in the woods.
Lost, alone and frightened.
You are nothing now;
not even a beacon of hope.
Sweet wine flows like the blood of the valley,
infusing it with a gentle calm,
that enters the heart and soul.
A crack in time's flow,
as I lay dying in a distant field,
reminds me of better times.
Friends gather to share some bread;
a reminder of lighter times;
happy memories resurface.
One voice in the fog,
of my final moments,
seeks to guide me back to you.
This oasis of calm, nullifies the pain that threatens;
the tendrils of evil have no hold,
here in this sanctuary.
A flicker, a heartbeat,
disturbs my silence,
and renews my hope.
Great men discuss discordant times,
hidden away from prying eyes;
as they seek to protect the innocence.
Friends reach out and grasp
my reaching hands,
as you reinforce my strength.
Heated words, mask fear and desperation,
as a diminutive figure offers hope,
with a selfless sacrifice.
Darkness recedes,
as I am carried away,
on a wave of passion.
Together,
with your protection,
and my determination,
we have succeeded.
Life does go on,
even though it stands still.
My Wife: The Lover
The Lover is perhaps one of the most important roles a woman has. It's not a physical thing, but it's something that pervades the heart and soul. A woman has the ability to wrap their heart around a man, protecting him from the dangers of life; a simple touch, a kiss, a hug are just enough to remove the worries of the worlds. Looking into a woman's eyes is like looking into one's own soul - the love in them is a reflection of all that is good and wonderful about being together, being with someone you love , like and adore.

Fragile Eternity
by Simon Cook
A thousand times I've lost myself in your deep and soulful eyes.
Your beauty reaches out snaring me in a blanket of eternal love.
Do you see the same in my eyes?
An intense feeling overwhelms me;
a desire to love and cherish combined with a passionate need,
to simply hold and defend your innocence against the sordid world outside.
Do you need to be hidden from the world?
Do I wear rose colored glasses that hide your strength and courage?
In my blindness do I neglect to see that it is I that need nurturing?
Are you the one defending me?
Am I the one who is lost in this world?
If I step back and take a look at you, what do I really perceive?
Do I see the only beauty in my life, or do I see that imprecise frailty,
that is the human soul?
Can you help me live?
Looking beyond your soul, reaching out into the cosmos,
I realize that I am scared; the fear that reigns over me,
has the power to stop me.
What am I fearful of?
I look into your eyes and often see death;
It's not imminent but it is a promise, and I do not understand it;
I cannot comprehend that eternity is but a mirage.
Do I fear death?
You are not dying, but you could be.
That is what I fear; the unknown future that I cannot control.
I know one day that I must face this as a martyr or a coward.
Why do I assume you will not face the same?
Perhaps the one thing I know is that you are stronger than me,
Your strength would guide me if I were dying,
while you would be comfortable with the future.
Am I wrong though?
Are you simply just like me, fearful that every day will change what we have?
Do you cherish every minute as if it could be our last?
Are you as a lamb facing slaughter?
So what can I do?
I must accept our fate, whatever it is,
And just continue to lose myself in your poignant eyes.
For held deep within them is my sanctuary.
All I can do is hold on and know that
eternity is fragile, but my love is not.
