Movies, movies, movies.

I have to admit that there are quite a large number of movies I have enjoyed over the years which are not included in this lens.

For example, Easy Rider, a cult classic now but I remember watching it when it first came out in the cinema and enjoying the movie greatly. I did watch it more recently and now find it dated and in some ways naive.

I guess it just shows how we all move on.

Then, of course, there are such classics as Bambi - and yes, I watched that in the cinema, loved it greatly but it still isn't a movie I would include in my favourites.

On the other hand, there are the wonderfully camp classic horror films from Hammer House of Horrors, they can't be beaten in their genre, yet they are not here.

So what movies am I incuding?

Well, I like a movie which can completely suspend reality for me and draw me right in to the story line. What does that? First and foremost it takes great acting.

The greatest actors.

Johnny Depp, Johnny Depp and more Johnny Depp, that's what I say LOL but of course, he can't be in every movie ... pity!

Antonio Banderas, mmmmm tasty, even better when combined with Johnny Depp (you seeing a picture emerging).

erm ... after that, well, there are a number I could mention but I would probably leave quite a few out and then it would be unfair. Suffice it to say that I consider these two as the cream of the current crop.

It wouldn't be everyone's choice. Jim Carrey, for example, is an excellent actor in oh so many ways but I am not a great fan of the movies he has been in and would like to see him in a much more challenging role sometime.

Anthony Hopkins, at times a frighteningly convincing actor, Dustin Hoffman, especially for Rain Man and Tootsie, Jack Nicholson, I particularly enjoyed him in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Sigourney Weaver for everything Alien, Robert Carlyle for his many roles, I could go on and on with this and would never finish.

Johnny Depp

Is there a movie which Johnny Depp has done that I don't like?

Simple answer - no.

Since I first saw him in movies I have thought very highly of his acting abilities and he is one of the few actors who truly sweeps reality out of my way and lifts me into the wolrd he creates. Every character he plays is made wholly credible by him, even the marvellously over the top Jack Sparrow and I just love the scenes in At World's End where Johnny Depp and his multiple personnae are interacting.

He carries this off so very well, seamlessly interacting with himself, even multiples of himself without breaking the illusion for one second.

Magic.

Possibly the best actor ever and I can't wait to see what he does next.

I've noticed that he is one thespian who takes very seriously the research and preparation he does for his roles. Obviously this makes some difference but his outstanding acting ability would shine through in any role.

The mark of a great movie

If I find that I have just watched a movie and I want to start the DVD from the beginning, then it has the possibility of making my great movies list.

Of course, that is topped by just about every movie Johnny Depp has made (I haven't seen absolutely all of his movies) but would also include The Usual Suspects because it doesn't matter how many times you see it, you still missed some subtle nuance.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy makes it because one viewing simply isn't enough. The acting is very good but in this instance it's more for the scenery, the props and the overall effects which are brilliantly put together. A tribute to the work of Tolkien, for sure.

The Secretary has to be in there partly because of the issues it touches on and because of the superb acting.

Interview With a Vampire, Saving Grace, The Full Monty, all have their merits in one way or another warranting their position in my list of greats.

But still, without doubt, Johnny Depp's movies come out on top.

This week just gone I have watched Pirates - At World's End every evening and still was finding little touches I had missed each time I watched previously. Not many movies can stand up to that kind of scrutiny.

Errrrrrm, I take it you like Johnny Depp then?
My eldest son, Laurent, would agree with you, ever since watching some television series on French TV every evening just after he finished (??!!!) his homework. I don't recall the series ... it might have been 21 Jump Street? :D
