My Maine Coon Cat, Soprano

I'm making this page about my cat because everyone likes to read about other people's pets. My cat is gorgeous and very tough. He has to be, he lives with two Pit Bulls. Like my dogs, he's a rescue animal. We got him at the Humane Society.

He was about a year old when we got him. We were looking for another cat, and we didn't want a kitten. We made the rounds of all the Animal Shelters in the area, and all The Humane Society Shelters near us. We found Soprano at the Coon Rapids branch of the Minnesota Humane Society. We had trouble deciding between him, and this gorgeous black Persian next to him. Soprano was a little bit more friendly, so we chose him. My husband, who doesn't really like cats, is the one that chose him. What does that say about his charisma? A lot if you ask me.

We went through the usual background check and paper work. For $100, we got our great cat. We tried to keep him and our dog Dixie separate after we got him home, because that's the way you're supposed to introduce new animals, but Soprano wasn't having that. He immediately came upstairs and made friends with Dixie, and the rest was history.

How we got Soprano

My husband and I bought a house about 7 years ago. I had two cats when we moved in. They both died shortly afterwards. We got our first dog, and my husband thought she needed a friend because we were both gone all day. We found our cat. He came home with us, and made himself comfortable right away.

I love Soprano because...

I love Soprano because he's not a breed that a lot of people have, he's talkative, and he loves to play with the dogs. He's always willing to give you a greeting when you wake up, when you get home, or just when you're relaxing.

A Funny Story

I've got a funny story about Soprano that I want to share with you. A couple of years ago, right after we got my dog Carmen, the cat decided to attack my husband. The funny part is why.

Carmen was a puppy when we got her, so she still wanted to chew things. We came home one day, and Carmen had chewed the Futon Cushion to bits. My husband proceeded to punish her for what she had done, and the cat decided he needed to defend his friend. He hid under the frame of the Futon and proceeded to take swipes at my husband. Every time my husband tried to get the cat, he avoided contact. When my husband backed off, the cat attacked again. Now that's a tough cat!

How Soprano Schedules His Day

Here's a few things that Soprano does every day. It doesn't matter what time it is, he just does these things all the time.

He always gets up with my husband when he gets ready for work at 5:30 a.m. He follows him around and waits for his treats that he gets just before my husband goes out the door. When I get up about 3 hours later, he follows me around and asks for his breakfast. When I do the dishes, and this is every time, while I'm wiping and putting away the silverware, he decides he wants attention. Just for the silverware though. He ignores me for the rest of the dishes.

When we put my son to bed, Soprano comes in and says good night too. Then it's time for a nap in my lap, lose a few of my son's toys, mess with one of the dogs if they're available, then just generally runs around doing cat things for half the night. Things like jumping on counters, chasing invisible things, and playing in the basement.

How's The Grooming?

You would think with all that long fur, and the different layers of fur that he has, it would be complicated to groom Soprano. Actually, it's not. Long hair and all, he hardly sheds. If you're really lazy, or your cat just doesn't like it, you don't have to brush a Maine Coon Cat at all. I sit down with Soprano and brush him about once a week. He enjoys it, and it's kind of relaxing for me too.

Indoors Or Outdoors?

I think that cats should be kept indoors. The average life expectancy of a cat that is let outdoors is about 4 years. Indoor cats have an average life expectancy of about 15 years. If you want to keep your cat around for a while, keep it indoors.

Should cats be kept indoors or outdoors?

Indoors

RinchenChodron says:

Indoors is safer and they will live longer!

I say whatever the cat wants. They need to be able to get out of the weather for sure. I believe most are happy to be house cats.

BigGirlBlue says:

Cats should definitely be indoors. Our environment has changed too much for them to roam around safely like they would have 30 years ago. Indoor cats have a longer lifespan and lead healthier lives.

I live on a creek where there are many native creatures, birds, rakali, possums etc. My cats have always been indoors every night

Outdoors

says:

hehe...I agree with singaporehosting... cats have a mind of their own. At first, we couldn't keep Ginger indoors. She kepts dashing out! So we decided to put her outdoors and now she always sneaks back in.

singaporehosting says:

I don't think you can decide :) . Cats decide themselves on where they want to be. They are very independent minded creatures.

Cat toys

Make sure you have plenty of cat toys available. Switch them up from time to time too. Cats get bored easily, and having different toys available, keeps up their hunting skills, and helps keep them happy.
