My Kids Love Scooby Doo!

I have two girls, ages 2 and 4, and they both LOVE Scooby Doo.  Because of that, I've become sort of an expert.  And I've seen episodes, movies and merchandise over and over again.  So, I thought I'd gather my knowledge of all this stuff here.  Quite honestly, I loved Scooby Doo when I was young, too.  And now I really love that they never age!  So, I've been up and down the internet looking for Scooby Doo stuff for my kids.  And it's scattered everywhere, but only a few things here and a few things here.  So, I thought I'd gather what I could find here...and give my two cents on some things as well.  First I'll start with just a little Scooby Doo History.

Characters

Fred "Freddie" Jones
Fred was the leader of the gang. Always dressed in blue and white, and originally had the famous red ascot. He made the decisions, and came up with the elaborate traps (which just about never worked).

Daphne Blake
In earlier episodes, Daphne was the bimbo. She almost always got captured by the villain and quite often screwed things up. In more recent episodes, she actually worked in a sort of McGyver-ish way. A q-tip, lip gloss and a hair pin could get them out of a jam.

Velma Dinkley
Velma is the smartie pants of the bunch. She could speak a bunch of different languages, conducted scientific experiments, and knew more than any encyclopedia. Some people will say that Velma is a lesbian. If you only saw the original episodes, I could see that. But in the live action movie, she actually gets a boyfriend.

Shaggy (Norville) Rogers The slacker is always the funniest. Shaggy is Scooby's best pal, and has a seemingly endless stomach. He was usually the bait, and was afraid of everything. Stoner? Maybe.

Scooby Doo
Scooby, the name sake for the entire show, was definitely loveable. Like Shaggy, he was very afraid and had a huge appetite. He'd do just about anything for a Scooby Snack, though. And in the end, whether on purpose or on accident, he would save the day!

Scooby Doo on DVD - The Early Years

All the great classic episodes you can find. They also play them on Boomerang and occasionally on Cartoon Network. These are the ones that, if you're as old as I am, you will remember.

Looking back.....

There are lots of different versions of the original series. Originally, 'Scooby Doo, Where are you?' aired from 1969 to 1972. Then, in 1972, they went from a half an hour to an hour, added special guest stars, and called them 'The New Scooby Doo Movies.' Some of the guest stars included the Harlem Globe Trotters, Don Knotts, and Batman & Robin. These ran until 1974. Then it was 2 years of re-runs.

Scooby has had some family join in, too. His cousin, Scooby Dum, appeared in a few episodes, and his nephew, Scrappy Doo, showed up in 1979 and stayed for a few years. In fact, from 1980 to 1983 the gang was split up. No Fred, Daphne or Velma in those years.

In 2002, 'What's New Scooby Doo' started airing on the WB. It followed the same general format as the original Scooby show (but with updated music and themes). It ran until 2005. Currently, there is a show called 'Shaggy and Scooby Doo Get a Clue' on the CW, but I personally don't like it. And, more importantly, neither do my kids. The animation is supposed to be updated, but they just don't look right.

Direct to video releases of animated movies began in 1998, and they're still putting them out. Thank goodness, because I can only watch 1 about 100 times before I start beating my head off the steering wheel.....and I actually like Scooby Doo.

A Pup Named Scooby Doo

This show ran from 1988 to 1991, and they've put them all on DVD. This is the typical format of 'Hey...here they were in Junior High School.' There are 7 DVD's. All the volumes have 4 eposides except for volume 7...it has 5 episodes.

What's New Scooby Doo

I like this series of Scooby Doo. It kept the same basic formula...there's always that popular song in the middle of the episode. Daphne got a bit smarter, and the stories were a little more creative. And Kiss guest starred in a Halloween episode! Very cool. These are the ones that are actually in my home library.

I don't know what it is about Scooby Doo but we grew up loving it and still do and our children love it too. I missed the original run of "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" but we watch it with our kids now. It is hilarious!

Live Action Movies

Although the live action movies didn't necessarily get great reviews, I liked them. They had enough adult humor for me, and it was just over my little one's heads. Slightly more scary than a cartoon for the kids, but they still have watched them over and over...so they're not so scary any more.

Scooby-Doo (Widescreen Edition)
