NBA Jam
With its fast-paced action and gravity-defying dunks, NBA Jam became arguably one of the greatest sports video games of all time.
A Brief Look Into Perfection
NBA Jam took a new approach to basketball, opting for only a 2-on-2 game where violence is not only allowed but encouraged. Games consisted of four 3-minute quarters that kept the action moving.
The game is best known for its gravity-defying dunks, which included somersaults, insane windmills, and helicopters. If a player scored three baskets in a row without the other team making a shot, they'd then be on fire, allowing them to essentially make any shot from their half of the court while also goal tending without repercussion.
Chicago, Seattle, and Utah were clearly among the elite teams in the game. One of the more underrated players was Tom Gugliotta of Golden State. A brilliant mix of power, speed, and shooting, Gugliotta (or 'Googs') could take over any game with a well-time block, steal, or 3-pointer. Paired with Latrell Sprewell, Googs made the Golden State Warriors one of the more underrated teams to play as.
One of the more frustrating aspects was the tendency for the computer to take over in lop-sided games. Find yourself winning by 20 points, and all of a sudden your players won't be able to make a shot or dunk no matter what you do. This allowed the other team to quickly catch up and get back into games that they were previously getting slaughtered in.
One trick that could easily be abused was the ability to goal tend. While this gave the other team the points for the shot, the game does not technically count it as a made basket. Thus, you can get on fire quite fast by simply goal tending the other team's shots and making your own.
When you are on fire, you are allowed to make four shots before your fire is extinguished. If you only make three and let your teammate do the rest, you can goal tend the rest of the game provided you don't let the other team score.

SNES NBA Jam
Midways classic arcade NBA franchise! When this game was converterd to the Megadrive and SNES, I just had to have it. Really addictive, fast paced gameplay (like most of Midways sports series, I love them all) and tons of fun with 2 or more players. Bommshakalaka indeed!
