From the lens 2012 NFL Mock Draft | Daniel - 5/12.
Generally this will be a place where readers will critique our mock. We get everything from great mock, to there is no way the Broncos draft a running back (2009: Moreno), and even things that are helpful to us they we may have not been aware of. Sometimes readers will help us make our next mock by giving advice. As a part of our new mock system we will attempt to give credit to readers who give us advice and ultimately change the way we see the draft going. So go ahead... Start Critiquing

- I don't put too much stock in Top Draft picks. Most of the 1st Round, especially the Top 10, is mostly hype. Plenty of HOF players have been passed by team after team, before someone picks them up. If a team trades down, they'll save some money and pick up a few more quality players.

- If you think the Patriots are going to draft a running back with suspect knees in the first round, I want some of what you're smokin'. Belichik realizes that the run game, while important, is not as vital a cog as it used to be. More to the point, without good blocking (read OG like Pouncey) runners such as the law firm and Woodhead don't keep defenses honest. It's much more likely that they will draft a RB later, as a complement to BJGE and Woodhead.

- You should include potential trades.... such as The Pats (with picks 28 and 33) trading one of these picks to say ARIZ (who miss on the top 2 QBs early in Rd 1) so they can draft Mallett or Locker before someone else (LIKE CINCY) grabs the guy they really want.
Or maybe use the Jets who trade up every year (to grab Revis, Harris, Keller, Sanchez, and Shonn Green - and that is just 3 of the last 4 years) trade up to grab a Cameron Heyward or something. Jets trade their first and next years 2 to move up 10 spots...
Just saying...

- If the Browns don't take Julio Jones (assuming he's still available at that time), I will be disappointed. Jones has proven he has the physical attributes to play at the next level. He has proven that he can produce in an offense that has quality backs and he knows how to make plays after he catches the ball. McCoy will be a better QB, and Hillis would have some room to run (which he needs if we look at the final few games of last season) if they Browns get a receiver in the draft. Even if Green is available at that spot, I think the Browns have to take Jones (or even trade down to get him later). Green is another Edwards (IMO), and the Browns need someone who will work. I think that adds up to Jones for them.

- I like the Petersen-Ponder 1-2 picks for he 49ers. It will be interesting to see what style the new 49ers leadership brings to the table and whether they will trade the #7 pick. I think there is a lot of value in the first few rounds, so would not be sad to see that happen. If they could drop to the middle rounds and pick up Ingram, I would like that as a surprise move. Would you prefer to see Ponder as the #2 pick or a trade for Carson Palmer?

- Great Mock Draft... but it will interesting to see how the off-season will impact the draft. With a possible impending lockout and with the draft possibly occuring before free-agency you could see teams drafting talent more than need because they are not sure if they will be able to get "their guy" in free agency. That and with the large amount of new coaches on NFL teams and how they want to draft their teams. For instance... I would expect the 49ers to drastically change their tactics in the draft with a new Head Coach and a new GM (new in the sense that he wasn't officially the GM and the McCloughan guy was running the last draft). One thing is for sure... they need a Quarterback. I look forward to seeing more mocks.

- Actually the consensus is that if they stay in the top 6-8 they will take either of the two CBs that fall to them. There is enough depth at safety to cross their fingers and hope for Rahim Moore in the 2nd round. I would imagine if they do not take Amukamara in the 1st they will go with one of the DEs.

- This mock is brutal due to the order of draft. Why are the Eagles listed @ # 22? As of 6:17PM on Monday night they would draft. #29. They just burried the Giants and this mock has the Eagles drafting before the Giants. Fix the order man.

- We hadn't planned on revamping the post season order for each mock because they are solely based on how teams fare in the playoffs. After we updated the order the only teams that significantly moved around in the order were the Bears and the Eagles. We have the Eagles at #27. Based on Win % they could be anywhere from #26 to #30.
After its all said and done the Eagles could be drafting before the Giants. We'll see. The order and the picks are now edited again. Thanks for your concern Mostel

- The Order was based strictly on win% at the time of the mock draft. You should also notice that there are going to be 7 NFC teams in the playoffs and only 5 AFC teams. Until the playoff field is set I will not set the order based on what I think will happen.
But thanks for noticing and getting involved in our mock draft.

- Why wouldn't the 49ers take Spiller? He legitemately fills three big needs both as a KR and as a 3rd down back/slot reciever for an offense that was rated 18th last year. Their defense was ranked 4th and and looks to be as good next year. I think they will have a hard choice if Haden and Spiller are there at 13, but if Spiller is there at 17 and the top four tackles are off the board as they are projected to be by almost everyone then he has to be the pick.

- I disagree that Detroit will not pick the best player available dur to cost. Mr Ford has indicated that $$ will not drive decisions. The Lions will (should) only take Okung if they feel they will be the better team after. They are not at a point where they should pass on the best player available.

- Couple things I don't agree with. I don't see the Jaguars going with Rolando McClain with their selection. They already have a second round pick Justin Durant manning the MLB spot and McClain is a much better fit as a 3-4 ILB. Not only is that the scheme he played in, his speed is questionable and it would be better disguised in a 3-4. The pick I see happening is Dez Bryant going there. He'd provide some excitement for the fans, and far more importantly give Garrad a real legit #1 target, instead of throwing to the elderly Torry Holt and Mike SIms Walker.
The other pick i disagree with is for the Seahawks at 14. I love the McCoy selection at 6, but this one is questionable. The real need for the Hawks is LT not RT where Davis projects better. The more important thing is that the Hawks run a Zone Blocking Scheme, and Alex Gibbs the creator of the scheme is the new Oline coach, They want smaller quick lineman who can work well in space. A guy like Charles Brown would make far more sense, especailly with the USC connection. Its a little early for him, but he weighed in over 300, so he has NFL weight.

- I could not disagree more with your take on Jax and Tebow. Gene Smith will not do that to the Jags or Tebow...it's a terrible match for several reason. Tebow needs a few years to grow and Jax nor Tebow need the fan pressure to play him before he's ready. And no decent GM would pick a player to try to gain short term ticket sales....it's just plain juvenile.

- The Saints have the TWO best young corners in the game in Tracy Porter, (See Manning Pick 6 in the Super Bowl), and Jabari Greer who was second ONLY to Darrelle Revis in Cornerback statistics. WHY would we draft a corner in the first when we are set for the next 5-6 years? P.S. Season ticket holder for the last 19 years, so I KNOW my team. We would do better by selecting a defensive end to serve as a back up to Will Smith and Bobby McCray, since Charles Grant is no longer on our team. Also, we will be looking for a SLB to replace Scott Fujita, who signed with the Browns a few days ago.
Oh, and one other thing..... WHO DAT DA CHAMPS! The Saints!!!! Dat's WHO!!!
-
-
-
McGunn21 Mar 16, 2010 @ 4:06 pm | delete
- I believe the current mock has the Saints drafting Sean Weatherspoon. The March 1st update has them taking a corner. It has since been updated. Patrick Robinson was a good value at 32 in that mock. Things have changed since then (free agency) (pro days) etc etc.

- There is ZERO chance that the RAMS will take a QB as the FIRST PICK of the Draft. Maybe, just maybe, if they trade out....maybe then they'll take a QB. But, no chance as it stands right now that they take a QB. It is too risky a move to draft a QB that for the most part, did NOT stand out this year. As a matter of fact, NO QB this year was so dominant that merits being the first pick of the draft. The safer pick (and quite a good pick it is) would be one of the DT's. Spags is a defensive minded coach. He likes to build his defense. Secondly, a veteran QB could be had via free agency or trade to be a stop-gap player for this year while their 2nd or 3rd round pick QB could gain experience.
Take care and keep these mocks coming.

McGunn21 Feb 27, 2010 @ 4:12 pm | delete
- Some people would say I am under-rating Bulaga. I have seen him going as high as #5 to the Redskins. Besides his short arms - 33 inches - he is the most technically sound tackle in the 2010 draft class. The comparisons - fair or not - are being made to Robert Gallery (who had 32 inch arms) and came out of Iowa as well. Bulaga easily could be the best tackle from this class, but just as easily could be the worst (of the top 5).

- A good effort overall. I believe my niners would pick Haden if he was there, but with the attention that Revis is getting this year; he might go higher. Cleveland and Denver could both jump on him. I would personally rather have Spiller because of his versatility as KR/WR/3rd down back. I like the OT pick, but I would be satisfied with Iupati as an athletic bulldozer also. I really don't think that he falls to the second round at 330 Lbs.

I know drafts unfold in weird ways, but I'd be surprised if Berry fell that far. Mcshay has him as his #1 player overall, and Kiper has him as #3.

McGunn21 Jan 4, 2010 @ 2:48 pm | delete
- I agree with your statement on the Seahawks... Another route I could see them taking is either Spiller @ 6 and OT @ 14 or OT @ 6 and best available runningback @ 14.
As far as Berry is concerned... he could go as high as 3 but he deffinetly could fall to 7. Michael Crabtree was ranked 2nd on the big board and fell to 10 last year. Crazier things have happened. But I do agree that Berry is a dynamic player. His position just doesn't have the value as a OT or QB

If you look at the D they are solid all around except at LB. So I would wait to draft that. They really need a QB like Colt mcCoy. They should draft a Tackle first then move up and get mccoy in the first round by trading away there 2nd round pick in 2010 and third round pick in 2011

- Nice job. The one criticism I have is with Dunlap being so high. He was already a danger to drop to the 2nd round before the DUI suspension, because of his laziness and unreliability. I don't believe any team will risk a 1st round choice on someone so likely to bust.
Think about this: How many times do you think he drove drunk before getting caught? It's like with cockroaches. They say for every one you actually see, there are at least 50 more in the house. Well this guy probably has a severe drinking problem. It would explain the lack of focus and drive. You would have to be nuts to risk a 1st rounder on him. There are other fine pass rushers, like Hardy, Morgan and others. This guy is just too likely to be an extreme failure to risk it. I don't think anyone will.

- In general I like your mock. Seems well thought out and feasible, unlike most I've seen. I do have a couple suggestions. I think it's unlikely Pioli spends 6th overall pick on Berry. He understands positional value, passed on Curry last year to take Tyson Jackson, and I'd bet he'd take Trent Williams vs. Berry. Williams is unspectacular, but does everything well and can play either tackle spot or guard. A very nice piece to solidify their O-line and help Cassell succeed. If it does fall that way, Seattle will probably try to trade down, or take Derrick Morgan. If Seattle does get Williams, they could go CJ Spiller at 23, but seriously doubt it's Jahvid Best. If they got Morgan, I could see them going O-line at 23 with Bulaga or Iupati.

- I highly doubt Pioli would Take Williams over Bulaga, Davis, or O kung or even Berry, Pioli saw what a dynamic safety can do for your defense (Harrision). I dont know if he will draft Berry or not, but If you look past his Draft History with the Chiefs, He never took a an OT in the first round. He has tooken a S, I think Berry is the likely pick. Sure he past on Curry, But I think that was the exception, rather the rule. You could be right, I just dont think its right to base it off of last year alone.

- No way the Chargers can resign Floyd, Jackson, Merriman, and McNeil. Its just too much. Ive looked at their cap and contrary to popular beleif, The CBA wont save them. They will agree on a new deal, To much riding on that agreement for it to not happen. The Chargers might have trouble keeping Jackson and McNeil. They have Cromartie and Gates to resign next year so they cant go to crazy or they will loss one of them. In my opinion, Floyd and Merriman and maybe even Jackson walk. Both Jackson and McNeil will get top 5 money, Merriman and Floyd will get top 15 money for their posistions. Even the Chiefs and Bucs couldnt sign all of them and they by far have the most cap.
