NASCAR History And Illegal Booze

NASCAR History has an unusual beginning.

Learn all about this little known NASCAR history.

NASCAR History Had A Strange Beginning

You are going to find this hard to believe, but NASCAR history had its beginning long before the invention of the automobile.

How is that possible you ask?

Little known events are really responsible for the creation of auto racing and make it all part of NASCAR history.

See, you would have known this if you had listened to your mother when you were back in school.

Poor mom always gets a bad rap.

Remember when your mom told you about how important it was to study your history assignments?

NASCAR history was part of what you missed.

Oh well.

So, let's get on with the fascinating NASCAR history.

What's 1794 Have To Do With NASCAR History?

You're absolutely right.

The automobile wasn't even invented back in 1794.

So why is this date important to NASCAR history?

Well, let me tell you pilgrim.

1794 was the year NASCAR history begins-Sort Of----

A federal tax put on whiskey was protested by the farmers at that time. Instead of paying the tax, these farmers created their own whiskey from their own illegal "stills".

Not only did these farmers make the booze, they also created an underground market for it and delivered it themselves.

This same delivery system was still used from 1920 to 1933.

Illegal Whiskey Helps NASCAR History

Now here's the really fascinating part.

"Bootleggers" were the men who ran illegal whiskey during the 1920's and early 1930's from private "stills" to regional markets. Driving at high speeds at night to elude police, being a "Bootlegger" was a dangerous job.

The fact is, often times it really was a race between the cops and the "Bootleggers".

When they weren't running illegal whiskey, "Bootleggers" were starting what would eventually become NASCAR history. They raced against each other to see who had the fastest cars.

Over the years these Sunday afternoon races became very popular.

But it wasn't until 1947 that NASCAR history gets a big boost.

Daytona And NASCAR History

The end of World War II brought with it change and opportunity.

We can all agree, that one of the greatest opporuntiies was for auto racing.

Bill France, Sr. was known for promoting races on the beaches of Daytona Beach, Florida. As the public interest in auto racing grew, Bill France saw the need for organization and rules.

And because of this, in 1947 he created the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR).
