Get Healthy with the Art of Acupuncture
Considered an alternative form of medicine, acupuncture was recorded 4,700 years ago in China. Shen Nung,k the father of Chinese medicine, wrote about circulation, pulse and the heart over 4,000 years before European doctors had any concepts about them.
Acupuncture is based on the energy force that runs through the body called Qi (pronounced chee). This energy consists of the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical aspects of life. Qi is combined with Yin and Yang, universal forces in the body that should be in balance.
Qi travels through the body by way of meridians or pathways. There are fourteen main pathways, evenly divided on each side of the body. When any of these pathways is blocked, the Qi is now allowed to travel freely and this creates an imbalance of the Yin and Yang. As a result, your body becomes ill.
Acupuncture is used to recreate balance. Along the pathways are points where they are close to the surface of the skin. It is at these points where the acupuncture needles are inserted.

How Acupuncture Works
According to Chinese medicine, acupuncture stimulates the points on the meridian where the needles are inserted and it relieves whatever was blocking the energy flow. With over 2,000 points, acupuncture can be used to heal a great many blockages.
According to western medicine it is believed that acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system and releases neurotransmitters and hormones. These chemicals boost the immune system and can regulate body functions. Here are the theories that back up these ideas:
1. Augmentation of Immunity - acupuncture raises levels of triglycerides, specific hormones, white blood counts, gamma globulins, and anti-body levels.
2. Acupuncture stimulates the secretions of endorpins in the body.
3. Seratonin and noradrenaline which are neurotransmitter are affected by acupuncture.
4. Acupuncture has the ability to constrict or dilate blood vessels.
5. Gate Control - This theory states that when the part of the nervous system that regulates the impulse interpreting pain becomes overloaded, it closes. Acupuncture can affect these gates.
Acupuncture has been known to treat:
Chronic and/or acute pain
Neurological Disorders
Upper Respiratory Disorders
Digestive Disorders
Urinary Disorders
Reproductive Disorders
Eye and Ear Disorders
Immune Function
Addictions
Depression
Anxiety
Insomnia

What's it Like?
There are nine types of acupuncture needles, however, six are most commonly used. The needles differ in length, width and shape of the head. The needles are put in anywhere from 15 - 90 degrees relative to the surface of the skin depending on what is being treated. The acupuncturist is looking for some sensation from the patient. After insertion, the acupuncturist may do one of the following depending on what is being treated: raising and thrusting, twirling, plucking, scraping or trembling.
