Coasters today are typically made in whole, or in part of cork or sandstone or lined on the bottom with cork. Their purpose is to prevent damage to the tabletop from the moisture or heat from the glass or mug.Beer mats, on the other hand, tend to be made of rubber, and are used under beer bottles, or steins of beer. At one time, they were typically made made of layers of paper fiber, and many still are. Beer mats commonly have advertising imprinted on them.
In common usage, however, many people make little distinction between the two.

I have a favorite tile by my bedside for my evening drink. I've placed little round felt 'feet' it (like miniatures of the felt pads used on some furniture legs) to protect the nightstand surface.

- I love that oceanic spiral tile. Also like the nautical chart coasters. A nautical theme is always a true favorite of mine. I am really missing my beach home.
