A new Beta Version has just been released!

I stumbled upon NetBeans IDE 6.1 and me being a DBA wanted to check out how this IDE interacted with IBM DB2 UDB 9.5. I found that using NetBeans IDE 6.1 --

1. The biggest advantage of NetBeans 6.1 over any other IDE available in the market is the GUI builder "Matisse".

2. A very sophisticated code editor that has a syntax high-lighter for all the programming languages supported in NetBeans, live parsing, popup javadoc and very efficient code completion.

3. An advanced Refactoring tool.

4. Wizards for creating web services and web services clients, providing Java/wsdl code needed, and easy to use testing tools of existing web services.

5. Version control support.

6. XML, XML Productivity Tools Wizards, DTD and CSS Text Editor to help user generate codes.

7. Database Manager and Query Client is available. I was able to establish a connection with IBM DBD2 UDB and start creating objects right away.

8. I didn't have to search tons of material and didn't take 100's of attempts typing the username, password and connection parameters. It was quick and easy to do - It took less than 10 minutes to get NetNeans and IBM DB2 up and running.

9. Netbeans 6.1 has a very advanced Profiling mechanism.

10. There are lot of inbuilt plugins available. There is even a plugin for Quizzes where you can win lots of goodies like Ninento Wii, Apple iPod.

You can download NetBeans IDE from this link
http://www.netbeans.org

NetBeans.org hosts a cool Tech quiz, which could win you amazing gifts, week after week. The prize for this week is an Apple iPod http://www.netbeans.org/quiz/

I will add a few more..Now, lets get to some serious stuff.

Connecting to IBM DB2 UDB 9.5 from NetBeans IDE

Just 5 easy steps and you are done

Step 1. Click on the link
http://wiki.netbeans.org/DatabasesAndDrivers which talks about the different drivers. The link for the IBM DB2 UDB driver is unavailable. So I searched and found the correct link which is
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/db2/java/

You need to register in the IBM site to download the zip file which contains the jar and zip files.

Step 2. Right click on the Driver and browse where you have kept the downloaded file and add the drivers.

Step 3. Expand the Drivers node, then right-click the IBM DB2 Driver and choose Connect Using.

Step 4. In the Database URL field, replace the default url jdbc:db2://localhost:50000/sample
Use the database which you have created instead of 'sample'

Step 5. Specify the username and password and press OK. You need to specify which schema to start with

PRESTO - You are now connected to IBM DB2 UDB in the NetBeans IDE 6.1.

Feature request to NetBeans.org

A few things I didnt find in the latest NetBeans beta

- Request to include XML datatype.
- Options to create Sequences, Alias and Triggers.
- Skelton code to be availabe when creating stored procedure so that we need not start from scrath.
