I'm making this lens as a tribute to an amazing video game that has enthralled my heart for so long. I have been playing NeverWinter Nights for more than four years and it still hasn't lost its appeal!

Intro Movie

This is the movie that's played at the start of the game. A really good watch for the first few times but then becomes all too familiar when you play the game often. I just skip the movie now so I can get to the main menu faster and resume my adventures!

Neverwinter City, Faerun

The Five City Districts

Developed by electronic entertainment company BioWare and released in 2002, NeverWinter Nights is a role-playing PC game set in the Forgotten Realms fantasy world of Faerun. The game revolves around Neverwinter City, otherwise known as the City of Skilled Hands and the Jewel of the North.

In the center of the city stands Castle Never where Neverwinter's ruler, the former adventurer Lord Nasher Alagondar, resides. From Castle Never, Lord Nasher governs and keeps a watchful eye over the city's five districts:
  1. City Core

The City Core is the heart of Neverwinter and contains the city's most important buildings and establishments. Apart from Castle Never, you'll find the Halls of Justice, a temple to the Just and Maimed God Tyr, here.

A little ways in front and to the left of the Halls of Justice looms the Cloaktower, the local mages' guildhouse headed by Eltoora Sarptyl. If you're a sorcerer, wizard or bard, you can apply for a Cloaktower membership and gain access to Eltoora's special store for arcane magic users.

You'll also find a number of merchants spread all over the district. I personally favor The Shining Knight Arms and Armor since I always get good prices from Durga, the store proprietor. You'll also find Marrok at the Shining Knight. He's a very useful dwarven smith who can imbue +1 magic weapons with additional magical effects. Branching out from the City Core are the four remaining districts.
  2. Beggar's Nest

As its name implies, the Beggar's Nest is populated by Neverwinter's poor and destitute. To the north is the Great Graveyard where Neverwinter buries most of its dead and to the east is the Great Academy where you, the hero of Neverwinter, will have trained and studied.
  3. Blacklake District

The Blacklake District is a conglomeration of mansions, estates and abodes of Neverwinter's elite citizens and nobility. The largest, most secure and most luxurious estate is owned by an elven wizard named Meldanen.

The Neverwinter Zoo is also located in this district. Quite disappointingly, the city zoo only boasts four mistreated animals -- a wolf, panther, bear and lion -- that are badly in need of rescuing.

Of all the districts, Blacklake is the most untouched by the Wailing Death plague due to the tight quarantine erected by the nobles.
  4. Docks

It is "never winter" in Neverwinter.

As Cletus, one of Master Ford's assistants, aptly describes the city, it is "never winter" in Neverwinter. This is due to the Source Stone, an interplanar pocket created by Morag, Queen of the Old Ones. The Stone, located beneath Castle Never, gives off a surprisingly gentle heat that warms the whole city despite her harsh and cold surroundings.

"The stone radiates a magical heat strong enough to keep the entire city warm even in this chill climate, yet gentle enough that you can actually go right up and touch the stone itself." - Master Ford, Chief Archaeologist of Neverwinter City

"The stone contains immense power and radiates a widespread but gentle warmth throughout the whole city. That's the reason it's never winter in Neverwinter." - Cletus, Assistant to Master Ford

A Reptilian Legacy

The Words of Power

The Old Ones were an evil, reptilian race that ruled Faerun at the beginning of time when the world was a hot, tropical jungle. They were the first civilization - the Creator Race. Under the tyranny of their dread Queen, Morag, the Old Ones ruled with a scaled claw, forcing all the "lesser" races to serve their vile intentions. Even the dragons of yore feared them.

For unexplained reasons, the world became colder and the Old Ones realized that they could not survive the coming winter. In a bid to preserve the race, Morag fashioned the Source Stone with the aid of four artifacts - the Words of Power. Within the Source Stone, Morag contained the heat of the old world's steam fissures. She and her people then sealed themselves within the Stone and went into a deep, magical hibernation to await the time when the world will become hot once again and they could reclaim their bloody and brutal legacy.

Envious and spiteful of the "lower" races' ability to survive the lowering temperatures, Morag designed the Words of Power to unleash devastating forces upon the Old Ones' awakening.

Original NWN vs. NWN 2

I've never played NWN 2 and it would be nice to know what sets it apart from the original game, aside from the stunning graphics. Fellow NWN enthusiasts, sound off your opinions! And don't forget to cast your votes below!

Which is better: the original NWN or NWN 2?

Original NWN

guapowarrior says:

It's the only one my poor video card can support.

myowncupoftea says:

I vote for the first NWN game because I like old stuff, hehehe.

Iatjad says:

I say the original game in terms of required PC specs. With my built-in Intel video card on my 3GHz Pentium 4 PC, the original NWN runs fairly smooth with just the Environmental Mapping on Creatures enabled. Otherwise, certain parts get choppy. My computer would have difficulty running the graphic-intensive NWN 2.

NWN 2
