New England's Autumn Foliage
Happy Fall everyone! I am so lucky to be living in the middle of a beautiful painting! This is how I feel every Autumn as I drive or walk along the roads of my little New England town and the surrounding area. The colors begin to show up at the end of August and continue to brighten through October and even longer depending on the area. And speaking of paintings - I was contacted by a reader of this lens to say that she is painting the "October Birch" photo below. I'd love to see that painting. ***It's October, 2009 as I am updating with new photos but I have left up some from 2008 because it was such a stunning season. Many of the swampy areas are very colorful now and are even beginning to go by, but the hills and lake shore are coloring quickly. Check out the link to the Interactive New England foliage map I have listed below. *Did you know that Mt. Washington in northern New Hampshire has some of the worst recorded weather on earth? Read more further down this page. **New Hampshire also has one of the most frequently climbed mountains in the world! Ever heard of it? Check out the Flikr photos too.

A Few Days Can Make a Big Difference
SEPTEMBER and then OCTOBER 2009 ~ Comparison shots
What a difference a week makes! The photos on the left were taken the last week of September and on the right - similar views that were taken October 5th, 2009 - about a week later. I also had a brighter day for photos in October which helped bring out the color.

These are postcards available at Narrow Road Designs

Life Around the Lake
The lake is always the best place for photography. All year long the wildlife is abundant, from the swooping swallows and red-winged blackbirds in Summer to the deer tracks frozen in the lake during winter, there are always signs of wild animals. Some mornings while waiting for the school bus with my son, we get to watch the otters (or are they beavers?) play. This year I had my camera one morning and captured our Canadian geese family crossing the road.
But animal photography is not my thing. Probably because I don't have a really great camera and can't get the close up shots I'd like. So, while I love to see the animals and I do take photos of them, I don't get too excited because the pictures are never very good. (I figure I'll see a big moose the day I DON'T have my camera!)
But Autumn is different...and it's the most exciting season for me as far as photography goes. Fall brings the brightest colors along the lake edge and especially in the swampy areas and it seems to brighten more each day. I enjoy walking in the crisp Fall air, and by the time the leaves begin to change the lake area and roadway is much less crowded because all the summer people are gone.
How & Why The Leaves Change
Answering your nagging questions about those colorful leaves!

I was never very good at science and after living in the south for a long time, I really didn't pay much attention to the Autumn season. Now I am tired of being ignorant and had to look up this information for myself, instead of asking my 10 year old!
Some years the Fall is so-so and boy do you hear it from the locals. "Crummy Fall." "The color isn't good this year." "It's all the rain." "It's all the cold." "It's all the heat."
Well, lets just say that "It's always something!"
A quick list of what makes for the most colorful Fall:
A warm, wet spring
A summer that's not too hot or dry
A fall with plenty of warm sunny days and cool nights.
For an easy to understand explanation of why and how the leaves change, I read EEK! Environmental Education for Kids.
Yup, I like the kid stuff when it comes to Science!

A Little Camp Wrapped In Color - Fall 2008
Last season's color, but too pretty to remove.

Taken last year in Fall 2008 and this year I don't see the bright color there this year. Probably these trees are gone or too damaged from the ice storm we had last December. See the link I mention about that below in the "horse pasture" module.
A Famous Movie Was Filmed In New Hampshire
Squam Lake was the perfect choice
In 1981 "On Golden Pond", starring Katherine Hepburn, Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda was filmed on Squam Lake in the northern area of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.
Do You Have a Favorite New England State?
6 Unique states make up New England
Whether you have lived there, live there now, or have visited the northeastern US, I wonder if you prefer one.
Vermont for skiing? NH for it's lakes? Maine for the coast?
And then there are the southern 3 which are more built up and city-like. Who doesn't love all that Boston has to offer?
The beauty of Connecticut, and the wonders of the smallest of our 50 states; Rhode Island.

The Kancamagus Scenic Highway
Can you pronouce this correctly? It's a famous sight-seeing road in New Hampshire that winds through the White Mountains.
The Kancamagus Highway is a 34.5 mi (55 km) long two-lane road that runs east and west overall through the White Mountains of New Hampshire, United States. Part of New Hampshire Route 112, i...

Inspired ~ Oak Leaf Art
How Far Have You Traveled to See the Foliage?
A New Hampshire reporter was interviewing an older woman and her son who had traveled from Scotland to see the changing leaves in the White Mountains. It is October 9, 2009 as I write this and the northern areas are at peak color and within the week pretty much all of this state will be at peak color.
Timing is everything and hopefully a storm won't blow away the leaves before you get some views and photography. I only have to look out the window or walk down the road to see the color, but I got to wondering how far some people travel.
Thanks for answering this poll question!
Ice Storm Damage Has Changed the Landscape

The small photo was take in September 2009 - and the large photo was taken in October 2008. Because of the horrific ice storm (I was without power for 8 days) we had in NH in December of 2008, many of the trees were broken, including the ones I photographed in this pasture.

This could be the last good photo of this stand of trees - for a while at least. Like so many trees in this area, they were all damaged in the ice storm we had in December, 2008.
One of This State's Famous Mountains
Did you know that one of the most hiked mountains in the world is in New Hampshire?
It's Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey.

Mt. Washington & Cog Railroad Photos
I've never taken this trip - too chicken!

I considered taking this trip, but I chickened out. Read more by clicking the links in the blue box below.
"Mt. Washington, in the NH White Mountains, holds the world record for wind speed."
Facts About Mt. Washington
Some world records are held here.
The way the mountain is situated in New Hampshire's White Mountains has a lot to do with why this particular mountain has the worst weather in the world. This article in TIME offers an explanation.
As I mentioned, Mt. Washington holds the world record wind speed of 231 mph which was recorded atop the mountain at the observatory on April 12, 1934.
