Keeping a Gratitude Journal

Keeping a Journal is a great way to remind yourself of your sincere intentions and to keep track of your progress or your slip ups. Without a place to report to, it is simply too easy to forget you ever had any inspiration for change . Writing down your short-term goals can help you break out of bad habits or reach a little higher for something you desire. The very best way to start is to write down the things you are grateful for. This simple act has the power to circulate the energy of gratitude in your life and bring you even more things, events, ideas, people and experiences to be grateful for.

Scientific Benefits of Keeping a Gratitude Journal

Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier

Did you know that there is a crucial component of happiness that is often overlooked? In the pages of this eminently readable book, Robert Emmons -- editor in chief of the Journal of Positive Psychology -- draws on the first major study of the subject of gratitude, of "wanting what we have," and shows that a systematic cultivation of this underexamined emotion can measurably change people's lives. Readers will discover how:

People who regularly practice grateful thinking can increase their "set-point" for happiness by as much as 25 percent.

Such increases can be sustained over a period of months -- challenging the previously held notion that our set-points for happiness are frozen at birth.

Keeping a gratitude journal for as little as three weeks results in better sleep and more energy.

Emmons also reaches beyond science to bolster the case for gratitude by weaving in the writings of philosophers, novelists, and theologians. Like no other book has before, Thanks! inspires readers to embrace gratitude and all the benefits it can bring into our lives.

A Place to Tell Yourself the Truth!

Keeping a journal for an extended period of time lets you learn the truth about yourself. Do certain problems occur again and again at work, at home or in your relationships? Do you notice when you are in a pattern of behavior that you just can't break out of? A Journal can reflect back to you how your motivation waxes and wanes, or how many projects you let fizzle out after a brief burst of excitement. Your journal is actually a gift to your future self! Keeping a journal today means you can look back in five years, ten years or in old age at what you were thinking and dreaming about. Here is where you secretly keep the past version of yourself.

Keep a Gratitude Journal

Start a daily practice of writing down all of the things you are grateful for. When you write in your journal, don't dwell on things that went wrong. Focus on the positive aspects of your day or week, even when you have to dig hard to find something. Writing down what you are grateful for can truly change your life as it brings your focus to the miracles everywhere around us. It might take a while for you to notice the effect, but you'll soon be seeing faster change in your life because we tend to move towards what we're focusing on.

The 1000 Journals Project: Traveling Exhibition

This exhibition celebrates The 1000 Journals Project, an ongoing collaborative and participatory experiment that follows 1,000 blank journals as they journey around the world. Each journal is stamped with a message inviting participants to draw, paste, rip, or write on its pages, and then pass it on when finished. Exchanged by friends and strangers or left in bus shelters and other unexpected places, the books have accumulated a rich tapestry of stories, drawings, and personal reflections. Collectively, the journals have traveled to more than 40 countries and all 50 states. Co-curated by anonymous project creator Someguy and Stephanie Pau of the SFMOMA Education Department, this presentation features a selection of journals that have returned to San Francisco. In keeping with the spirit of the project, journals and art supplies will be available to visitors, offering an open invitation to participate in this exciting social-art experiment.

Voyeuristic. Inspirational. Entertaining.

One thousand blank journals are currently circulating throughout the world.

These journals beckon contributors who find them by chance on trains, in cafes, and anonymously left on doorsteps. Artist Someguy shares more than 250 of the best entries: a collage of African countries repositioned into a new continent; the musings of a teen trapped in a drug- ravaged community; a student's humorous personal ad for his ideal girlfriend .

Hi BK, Been trying to work my way thru the FSContestents to ck all the lens and I was delighted to find your excellent lens. I've been blessed most of my days to have been taught to understand the joy of learning an "attitude of gratitude". The journal is a great idea and I'm sure it has served you well! Congrats on LOTD also. Stars and faved. BTW one of my favorite moments of gratitude was enjoying R&R on Maui way back in 1971 when there was only one chain hotel there...The Holiday Inn out at Kapalua. I stayed w/some friends I met on a sailboat near the old hotel @ Lahania. Rented a car and drove to Hana... didn't want to leave... You have a beautiful place to live, write and sing! Went back several yrs ago... couldn't believe the commercial growth and changes!

Lovely - I find there is nothing as tempting as a beautiful blank book! Besides, wouldn't we all be better off if we focused on what was good in our lives instead of complaining on what is going wrong? Thank you for sharing:)

Your lens inspired me to start journaling as one of my New Years resolutions. I was given a journal when I retired in 2001 and had misplaced it when we moved. I found it a couple of weeks ago and then I found your lens. Seems to go together as a sign of something; perhaps that maybe this time I will actually keep one of my resolutions and also keep writing longer in a journal. Great lens worth 5Journals and a lensroll.

Perhaps you would like to voice your opinion in my Hey Monkey Brain lens:
