Stay in and watch the ball drop in New York City

(Or go to New York and watch it live)

Every year, millions from all across the world stop to watch the sparkling ball drop in Times Square, New York city.

The New Years Eve Ball dates back to its first descent back in 1907. Back the ball was made of wood and iron and was set with 100 25 watt light bulbs.

The only years the ball has not dropped between now and then was in the years 1942 and 1943 due to war time energy conservation. Crowds still gathered to celebrate those years, but they greeted the New Year with a moment of silence followed by ringing chimes.

This year, for the balls 100th birthday, it is being redesigned. This year, it will be a new LED ball that is sure to impress all those who gather to celebrate
