New York City Weekend

This is the only page you need to plan your weekend in New York City!  What to see, what to skip, and how to spend your time: a guide to making sure your weekend in the city is one to remember.

The Must-Have Resources

These 5 Links Are All You Need

New York City Weekend Entertainment (Things To Do In NYC)
A great resource! This page shows 5 incredibly unique, very "New York" things to do. Each lets you enjoy some of the glitz and glamour that the city has to offer, without making your wallet scream for help. On the page you can find out more about the different NYC things to do, read unedited reviews written by people who have done them, and purchase tickets.
NYC Subway Map
Don't be intimidated by the NYC subway. It's easy to use, cheap, and well-staffed by employees and native New Yorkers should you get lost or confused (don't worry, it happens to the best of us).
Hopstop: Public Transportation and Walking Directions
Ok. So you're at your NYC hotel and you know the address of the restaurant you're going to, but you have no idea how to get there. Hopstop saves the day! Plug in the starting and ending points, select your public transportation preferences (maybe you're like me and hate riding on buses), and get detailed travel instructions. Coolest feature: it even gives walking-only directions if you're feeling up for a stroll.
NYC Restaurants
It feels like there's a million restaurants in NYC. You need a plan of attack. Menupages allows you to sort by type of food and/or neighborhood. Check out the restaurant reviews. Be bold!
Time Out NY
So much to see and do, so little time. Time Out NY is a great way to find out what's going on during your stay. From NYC concerts to off-Broadway theater, Time Out NY is the place to start.

New York City Things To Do

Trust Me: This List Will Save Your Trip

Newsflash: New York City has a lot to offer. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your trip to NYC, including activities that live up to the hype.

1. RIDE THE NEW YORK SUBWAY!
It's cheap, it's effective, and if you skip it you stand to miss out on the best display of New York's character. Every ride borders on performance art. Seriously.

2. WALK THROUGH CENTRAL PARK!
Have you seen a Manhattan map? Yeah? That green monstrosity in the middle has a lot going on. My personal fave: taking out a paddle boat from the Loeb Boathouse (located near 74th Street, on the east side of Central Park).

3. DRINK AT THE CITY'S OLDEST BAR!
McSorley's doors first opened in 1854, and they've stayed that way since. The place is a living legend. It's on 15 East 7th.

4. WALK ACROSS THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE!
Seriously: this is one of those classic New York things to do that lives up to its reputation 100%. The Brooklyn Bridge is spacious and wooden and offers great views of the Lower Manhattan skyline. Be sure to check out the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory below the bridge on -of course- the Brooklyn side.

5. PICK UP A VILLAGE VOICE!
It's free, can be found on almost any street corner (look for the red box) and is a great source for weekly NY events.

6. DON'T THINK BROADWAY'S GOT ALL THE SHOWS!
Wanna see a unique show? Hint: look beyond Times Square to off- or off-off-Broadway shows. Use a NYC events listings (see above) and I can guarantee there will be something there you can't find back home.

7. BROOKLYN IS PART OF THE CITY!
Don't fall into the trap of thinking the city ends at the East River. Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum and the Botanic Gardens are all side-by-side and are a great way to spend an afternoon. Williamsburg (specifically Bedford Avenue) is a wild hub for hipsters and artists.

8. VISIT THE IRISH HUNGER MEMORIAL!
It's not at the top of everyone's list, so checking it out might help you get away from the crowds for a minute. It's beautiful and offers great views of Lower Manhattan.

Watch Out!

These Aren't All They're Cracked Up To Be

1. TIMES SQUARE IS A TOURIST TRAP!
Most New Yorkers cringe just at the thought of Time Square. Sure, it's the symbol of the city and you should see it, but don't think you'll find the "real" New York there.

2. THE MANHATTAN BRIDGE IS NOT VERY NICE!
Unless you love views of chain-length fences and the sounds of trains passing inches from your face, you're better off sticking with the Brookyln Bridge.

3. WALL STREET ISN'T MUCH TO SEE!
It's a tiny street, crammed with nervous people, barricades, and police with dogs and automatic rifles. If you do go: make it worth the effort and see Trinity Church at the end of Wall St.

4. THE MET IS A MONSTER, YOU CAN'T SEE IT ALL!
Admission is "pay what you wish," which makes it pretty hard to cross off of your list of things to see. But, be warned: it is huge. To make sure it remains fun rather than a burden, you should go in with a clear plan of what you want to see.
