Newborn Screening

We cannot stress the importance of these tests enough. If the baby has a disease you will not know it until the baby shows a symptom. Unfortunately, once a symtom is displayed it is too late, for the symptom cannot be reversed. If the disease is found before the symtoms shows, the treatment may be a little change in diet. This is all the baby will need to grow up almost normally. (In the case of Sickle Cell their is no treatment for symptom prevention, however it is better for it to be known, because the baby will undergo a pain crisis. The pediatrician's knowledge of Sickle Cell disease, informs him/her how to treat the baby. Also, it makes posible genetic counseling for the parents, and the adult patient of Sickle Cell.)

Newborn Screening In Illinois

In Illinois, aproximately 180,000 babies are tested every year. From July 2002 through September 2005 a total of 602,771 babies were tested. In this period, around 852 babies were found with some kind of disease; from these 707 were comfirmed. While statistically it is less than 2% of babies found with a disease, remember it is 707 lives saved because of our program. This also means happy parents, family, and friends. Statistics can not measure hapiness and hope kept alive. That is the beauty of our work.
