Well, its finally here!

The 2008 Olympic Games officially opened at 8:08pm
on the 8th August, 2008 (08/08/08) in Beijing China.
Among the thousands of athletes, competing in
28 different sports there are 433 Australians,
among those there are 15 very special people -
they hail from Newcastle and the Hunter Region in New South Wales Australia.

Beijing Olympic Site #1 - The Bird's Nest 

Who, What, When and Where of the National Stadium or "Bird's Nest"

What? The National Stadium, "The Bird's Nest".

Who? A Design competition was held in 2002 for the design of the new National Stadium. This was won by architects Herzog & de Meuron. Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei, was the Artistic Consultant for design.

Seating Capacity: 91,000 (80,000 after the games)
Dimensions: 330m long x 220 wide x 69.2m tall
Area: 258,000 square metres (204,000 usable)
Materials: 36 km of unwrapped steel (45,000 tonnes)
Cost: 3.5 billion yuan ($560 million AUD)

Beijing Olympic Site #2 - "The Water Cube" 

Who, What, When and Where of the Aquatics Centre.

What? The National Aquatics Centre, "The Water Cube".

Who? The structure was designed by the Australian company PTW Architects, structually engineered by CSCEC International Design and Arup and built by CSCEC (China State Construction Engineering Corporation).

Facts?
Seating Capacity: 17,000 (6,000 after the games)
Base Area: 32,000 square metres base area
Surface Area: 65,000 square metres
Materials: Steel space frame, it is clad with ETFE and is the largest ETFE clad structure in the world.(over 100,000 m² of ETFE pillows that are only eight one-thousandths of an inch in total thickness). The ETFE cladding allows more light and heat penetration than traditional glass, resulting in a 30% decrease in energy costs.
The outer wall is a foam structure based on the formation of soap bubbles.
Cost: 800 million yuan ($128 million AUD)
