My Review of Michael Crichton's Next

Next is a sci-fi, technological mix of fact and fiction that examines the moral, legal, and ethical consequences of gene manipulation and explores what just may come next.

The chapters are short and there are many characters with a lacking main character. But these only make the book harder to put down as you want to read what happens next.

Next is a book that deals with parallel storylines from scientist, to the lives of Davy, a transgenic monkey who learns to surf. Or there is Gerard, the parrot who has been crossed with human genes that could help you with your math homework.

In this book, Crichton does not so much warn us against scientific advances or its abuse from commercialization. What it deals with is human motives. An evil person can use biotechnology for damage, or a good person can use it to help the sick and to cure the ill.

Is your loved one missing some body parts?

Are blondes becoming extinct?

Is everyone at your dinner table of the same species?

It's 2006: do you know who all your children are? Do you know humans and chimpanzees differ in only 400 genes? And why does an adult human being resemble a chimp foetus?

There's a new genetic cure for drug addiction - is it worse than the disease? Ever want to design your own pet? Change the stripes on the fish in your aquarium? Ever think to sell your body fat - or donate it to charity? Or sell your eggs and sperm online for thousands of dollars?

Did you know one fifth of all your genes are owned by someone else? Come to think of it, could you and your family be pursued cross country just because you happen to have certain genes in your body?

Welcome to our genetic world. Fast, furious, and out of control. This is not the world of the future - it's the world right now. Most of the events in this book have already happened. And the rest are just around the corner.

Get used to it.

Michael Crichton Biography

John Michael Crichton ,- Crichton, Michael. "For Younger Readers", michaelcrichton.com, 2005. Retrieved 11 December 2005. (October 23, 1942 - November 4, 2008) was an American author, producer, director, screenwriter, and physician, best known for his work in the science fiction, medical fiction, and thriller genres. His books have sold over 150 million copies worldwide, and many have been adapted into films. In 1994 he became the only creative artist to ever have works simultaneously charting at #1 in television, as creator of ER; in film, with the adaptation of Jurassic Park; and in book sales, with Disclosure.

His literary works were usually based on the action genre and heavily feature technology. His novels epitomised the techno-thriller genre of literature, often exploring technology and failures of human interaction with it, especially resulting in catastrophes with biotechnology. Many of his future history novels have medical or scientific underpinnings, reflecting his medical training and science background. He was the author of The Andromeda Strain, Congo, Disclosure, Rising Sun, Sphere, Timeline, State of Fear, Airframe, Prey, Next (the final book published before his death), Pirate Latitudes (to be published November 24, 2009), a final unfinished techno-thriller to be released sometime in the fall of 2010, and Travels. .http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/06/books/06crichton.html?_r=2&ref=arts
