Niagara Falls- the "Thundering Waters"
Niagara Falls Basics

Some say that Niagara is the Native word for "Thundering Waters".
Niagara Falls was formed about 12,000 years ago by receding glaciers. during that time, it has retreated about 11 km (7 1/2 miles) upstream.
Believe it or not, Niagara Falls is not one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Victoria Falls in Africa has that distinction. Niagara is also not the tallest waterfall in the world. At a height of 52m (170 ft), and another 52m below water level, the talest part of Niagara (The Canadian Horseshoe Falls) is ranked 50th in height. The tallest is Angel Falls in Venezuela. These super tall falls have very little water flowing over them. What makes Niagara so beautiful is the volume of water, 600,000 gallons per second that fall over the Falls. At some times, the Niagara River above the Falls reaches speeds op to 45 miles an hour.
Niagara Falls is actually 3 different falls. First there is the American, or Rainbow Falls, then the smaller Bridal Veil Falls, and lastly, the Canadian, or Horseshoe Falls. When most people think of Niagara Falls, they think of the Horseshoe Falls.
The Legend of Niagara
"Indian legend tells of Lelawala, a beautiful maid betrothed by her father to a brave she dispised. Rather than marry, Lelawala chose to sacrifice herself to her true love, He-No, the Thunder God, who dwelled in a cave behind the Horseshoe Falls. She paddled the canoe into the swift current of the Niagara River and was swept over the brink. He-No caught her as she plummeted and together their spirits are said to live forever in the Thunder God's sanctuary behind the Falls."- The Magic of Niagara, by George Bailey The Day that Niagara Stopped
Not really. What happened was that the ice flows that were on the upper part of the Niagara River had started to defrost and floated down river. They created a temporary dam just above the Falls. By the next day, they had melted enough to allow the water to flow again.
Honeymoon Capital of the World
The idea Of Niagara Falls as a honeymoon destination began about 200 years ago.U.S. vice President Aaron Burr's daughter, Theodosia, And Joseph Alston probably started the trend. The next year, Napoleon's younger brother, Jerome Bonaparte, And Elizabeth Patterson had their honeymoon there.Since then, Niagara Falls has been the place to go for a romantic getaway.
