Niche List Building Tips

Hi, Welcome to Niche List Building Tips, the third in The Niche Reaper series of lenses to give you a kick start on your Affiliate Marketing journey!

'The Money Is In The List'. right? And you must have heard that before.

All those 'Gurus' with hundreds of thousands of people on their lists. They are the only ones who will really benefit from List Buiding, right?... wrong!

You see, List Building isn't about numbers... it's about people... and it's about building up a relationship with them. A mutually beneficial relationship. People on your list are your customers.

A different approach is required from say, an adwords campaign pointing to a review page where you (hopefully) make sales as an affiliate. In this case you are (almost) invisible to the end buyer.

So, you need to think more strategically!

Why Use List Building?

Let's cover the basic principles...

The most important thing to remember about List building is you are capturing leads and have therefore gained multiple repeat opportunities to sell to those leads. If you don't capture your leads you are missing a massive opportunity.

And also let's remember a very important point:-

We are not talking about spam. Everyone hates spam and it just does not work. Any fool can throw mud at a wall and hope some of it sticks, right?

List Building Is Strategic

Like a game of chess...

List Building is a strategic form of Internet Marketing.

Don't let that put you off. We do not mean it is difficult (once you know what you are doing it is quite easy.)

But it is a longer term strategy in comparison to say, a pay-per-click Adwords campaign. With PPC the results can be dramatic and instant. With List Building we are looking over the longer term.

The key element is to build a relationship with your customers. To build trust, so that when you recommend a particular product or service your customers value your judgment and are therefore happy to make a purchase based on your recommendations.

List Building is like a game of chess. You don't just need to know how all the pieces move around the board and stuff...you need a strategy to win the game.

Both Thad and I started by mastering Adwords and that is still a big part of our business strategy but to really build a long term sustainable IM business you need to start List Building.

We both bought Inside the List by Kyle & Carson, the owners of Wealthy Affiliates, around about the same time and it immediately made a huge impact on how we approached our businesses. We both realized a fundamental change of approach was required.

Now, we can't even begin to replicate the information contained in Inside the List on this lens, so what we're going to, is provide some tips and pointers to get you started.

Automating Your List Building

You will need to invest in a good Autoresponder service...

E-mail marketing would not really be feasible without a high degree of automation. It would simply be a nightmare to manually manage a List Building campaign from your own in-tray.

Now, unless you are real techy wizard who can build your own system, you are going to need help. Happily, there are some excellent bespoke services that provides an outstanding service at a very reasonable price.

Thad and I both use Aweber, so we recommend them because we use them.

A Word of Warning on Using Free Autoresponders.

There are free Autoresponder services available. We are not going to recommend any here at all but if you have found a good one, by all means let everyone know in the modules below or in the blurb.

Here are the main problems with using a free service:-

Nothing is free. There's no such thing as a free lunch and the same applies here. The free services we have seen all add their own advertising to your mails and other stuff. Some redirect your customer after sign on to their pages or worse, those of a competitor.

There is no proper follow up series. Most of the free services only offer a very limited follow up series, often only one autoresponse. You are then sent the customer's e-mail address but you are on your own from then on. So, anything else you want to send out has to be done manually. Good Luck with that one!

Spam protection. This is the biggest problem of all with the free autoresponders. Most computers and e-mail client software now have built in anti-spam filters. There programs are becoming more and more sophisticated and will block e-mails they consider to be spam before your customer even sees them. Unlike Aweber the free autoresponders don't cater for this so you may find customers happily sign up to your list and then don't even get your mails at all.

So, that's why we strongly recommend you use a professional service like Aweber.

Do you want to run a professional business? If so, remember your e-mails quickly become the 'face' of your business!

No Worries JN:)

There's also a link to the guide on how to add an opt-in form on a lens under the opt-in form on this lens.

JNFerree says:

Dah, I only had to click down 1 click to find EXACTLY what I was looking for. Pardon the "brain fart"!

JNFerree says:

Would be 'nice' if you could show the details on how to ADD these list building modules to my Lens and link it to my Aweber forms?

NicheReaper says:

Aweber for me obviously but I'd love some opinions from the opposite camp.

GetResponse

NicheReaper says:

What? Nobody has anything to say about GetResponse?

Capturing Leads

How to get people on to your list...

The mechanics of capturing your leads are quite simple using a service like Aweber. Basically you create an opt-in form (like the one above) and add to your websites, blogs or lenses.

(Download Your Free Guide Here for adding an opt-in form to a Squidoo lens.)

Offer an Incentive!

OK! So you've got your opt-in form on our lens. Is that all you need to get people to sign-up to your list?

Whilst the opt-in form is obviously essential it is not the most important element in building a list. You need to give people a compelling reason to sign-up.

So during your niche research you need to also look for incentives you can offer to your list. These can take many forms: a newsletter, a tip sheet, a really hot article, possibly even a bonus from a merchant or discount.

It is not as hard as you may think to create a simple 'how to' guide to go with a product or service offering, so be creative.

Whatever it is you are offering, it must be both relevant and compelling.

And you absolutely MUST be able to deliver it!

Your Mail Messages Series

Don't be spammy, OK?

There are no hard and fast rules on messages but here are some basic pointers.

1.Your first message must also include your incentive or details of where to get it. The message should be a basic welcome and thank you message.

2.Try to be brief in your messages, though this is not always possible.

3.Don't hard sell your products and services. Build your relationship with your customers and then recommend your products and services.

4.Don't bombard your list with messages. They will get fed up and unsubscribe and may even flag you as a spammer.

5.Do you need to have a full series of messages ready before you start? No, but you must at least have the first one... you can then build from there.

Never Spam Your Customers

Irrelevant spam is utterly pointless and counter productive. We all hate it. So, why do they do it? You'll have to ask a spammer because we just don't see the point of it at all. It's just plain bad marketing.

Think Strategically

Think outside the box...

Remember, we said earlier that List Building is like a game of chess and you need a strategy to win the game.

Well what we mean is you need to think outside the box. Your first aim is to get people to opt-in to your list. One of the best ways to do that is to offer something for free.

You may well have had to pay for that free offering, either with your time and effort or real hard cash.

You may use Adwords to drive traffic to your blog or website in order to get people to opt-in. That will cost you. Would you consider paying for an Adwords campaign that drives people towards a free offering?

Don't get obsessed with getting an immediate return on any investment you may have made.

Think longer term, think strategically.

in reply to ChineseKitesforKids Hey just take your time. List building is not hard to do but don't get deflected. You've made a great start with your lens. Build slowly from there.

I am still very new to the whole internet marketing thing, I'm teaching myself so it's a slow and grueling process. List building is something that I have heard of but not implementing. It's hard to get honest advice these days on which way to go in internet marketing so I just go into it blind and self taught and hope I get somewhere.

Hi, Joan... best advice I can give you is to slow down. Slow down and learn the ropes first. Start with a few articles or lenses. It really doesn't matter if you don't make a dime when starting out. Just don't give up and keep learning...build slowly and learn as you go.

DON'T think you have to have everything in place before you start or that you need to be an expert.

That way of thinking stops people dead in their tracks (AND makes 'em fall for the next Guru 'magic trick'.)

Keep going...Small Steps...Into Action!
