Nick Vujicic is a young man who was born without any arms or legs. He is now a minister sharing his story and inspiring people of all faiths with his message of hope and love. Learn more about Nick here.
I've never been one for "hero worship" in any form, so my self-identification as a bona-fide FAN of Nick Vujicic is a step outside of my norm. I've not met Nick in person, I don't know him personally, and I'm not even of the same faith, but I have been touched by his presence on this earth just the same.
Nick is my touch-stone, my reminder that in my darkest hours of pain and suffering, I have the strength to go on.
Nick is the same age (give or take a few months) as my youngest daughter, so I realize it could just as easily have been her as him who entered this world so equipped. As a mother, I wonder if I would have had the stamina and resilience to not only raise this special child, but to help him find his unique place in the world.
If you've never heard or known about this amazing young man, you're in for a treat. Grab some tissues, because his life story and his testimony will touch you at a deep level, regardless of your religion (or even lack thereof).
Nick Vujicic (pronounced Voy-a-chich) was born in 1982 to Dushka Vujicic, and her husband Pastor Borris Vujicic in Melbourne, Australia. After an uneventful gestation and with no family history to explain his condition, little Nicholas arrived without arms or legs.
Today, Nick is a much sought after speaker through his company, Attitude is Altitude. Who could have guessed that the beautiful baby boy who entered the world limbless, would grow into an adult with such a mission to inspire and motivate that he would end up touching hearts and lives all over the world?
Nick inspired me when I followed a link from a Twitter Tweet and saw him on YouTube. I was moved to tears, and want to introduce him to you.

It Was Never Easy
Everyone Struggled, Nick Most Of All
Nick's entrance into this world took everyone by surprise. There had been nothing to indicate that there would be any problems with the unborn child. It affected not only Nick's parents, but the church that Nick's father ministered to.
As Nick describes it, "They went through different stages of grief and confusion. Why did this happen? Who made a mistake? They realized that doctors didn't make a mistake ... and my mom didn't do anything wrong in the pregnancy; and it was four months before they actually came to terms with it. It was something that the whole church was asking: why would something like that happen?"
As a child, Nick prayed for arms and legs - wouldn't you? Nick describes it like this: "It said in the Bible, 'Ask and you shall receive.' I had faith, and I was actually very angry at God. I didn't understand it. And I thought maybe I wasn't good enough. Maybe that's the reason why he's not answering my prayer. I mean, arms and legs are nothing for God, the creator of the universe. And so, I prayed for my circumstance to change, but it didn't happen."
One thing Nick had going for him, however, was a friendly, steady gaze and a warm and inviting personality, so his mother advised him to start talking when people stared at him, as they often did.
"Because when people see me talking and speaking, they forget that I have no arms and no legs, and they just treat me like any other person. And I remember ... when I was 6 or 7 years old, I looked at myself in the mirror one day. I wanted to pick out something of my physical features that I knew was good. And I looked at my eyes, and I said, 'You know what? No one can change my eyes.'"

Nick has a Sense of Humor
This photo shows Nick pulling a practical joke on an airplane. He had somebody put him up in the carry on compartment and then is reported to have yelled "BOO!" when somebody opened it up. I don't know if that story is true or if somebody photoshopped this photo, but it is just too funny not to include.

- I love Nick (doesn't hurt that I have one of my own) and I loved this lens. I have a glow on my face now, makes it so much easier to go through my life with its little challenges with grace. Kudos on an excellent effort!
