Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint | Heel Pain Symptoms and Treatment
As someone who has dealt with the heel pain associated with planar fasciitis, I'd like to recommend some night splints for plantar fasciitis which have helped me in the treatment of heel pain.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a sheath of tissue which runs on the bottom of your foot, from your heel to your toes. When inflammed it causes pain, specifically heel pain. The pain in heel of foot is especially pronounced first thing in the morning, when you take your first steps out of bed. Your sore heel can also be very painful after long periods of sitting or standing. A doctor once explained to me the reason why it hurts so bad first thing in the morning. He said that as you sleep, your foot is in a relaxed position. As you sleep, your body is healing the plantar fascia tissue that is damaged. But because your foot is relaxed, when you place weight on your foot in the morning, and your foot is stretched, its almost as if you are tearing all new tissue that was repaired overnight. You are stepping down and making tiny little tears in the tissue.
The reason doctors recommend night splints for plantar fasciitis is for that very reason. While in a night splint, your foot will remain in a gently stretched position, allowing the plantar fascia tissue to heal in that position. Then when you wake up in the morning and step down, you won't be tearing any of the newly healed tissue. The night splint also improves your plantar fasciitis simply by keeping your foot in a flexed position all night. Stretching your arches and calves is one of the treatments to improve the heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis.

Plantar Fasciitis Surgery
I first developed plantar fasciitis while I was a college basketball player, a probable outcome of year around overtraining. (However, plantar fasciitis can be developed by anyone.) It began as foot pain at the end of the basketball season my sophomore year. The athletic trainers thought it would heal itself when the season was over and I had a few months of easier training. I did daily stretches for my calves, as well as ultrasound, icing, and toe exercises. But the pain continued the next season, and got to the point that I literally could not walk down the hall to the bathroom in the morning, because it felt like I was stepping on a knife. The training room staff actually made me a custom night splint, almost just like making a cast, that I would use at night. But because I really didn't start treating it for a year, and didn't have must rest or time off from athletics, my heel pain was not responding to any of the typical treatment options. I started seeing an orthopedic surgeon, who also tried injecting my heel with cortisone injections. The injections helped quite a bit, but not to the point that I could play without pain. Right before my senior season, the doctors determined that the only treatment option left was to do surgery. I had a partial plantar fascia release, in which they cut a portion of the plantar fascia tissue in order to relieve the strain and inflammation. I recovered well and was playing again a few months later. However, my pain was never 100% gone.To this day, my foot hurts if I walk barefoot, or wear sandals or flip flops all day. And actually today I also have a slight case of it in my other foot. Right now, my best defense against my heel pain is to use a night splint. Now, truth be told, I don't use it every night like I should. In fact, I probably only use it a few times a month when my foot is really bothering me. However, I can immediately tell a difference in how my foot feels the next morning after wearing the night splint all night. My heel pain is greatly decreased and my foot feels SO much better. I honestly believe that if I was disciplined enough to wear it every night I probably could get rid of 90% of the heel pain I still have.
Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms
Heel Pain Symptoms
- Heel Pain that develops gradually
- Often times in only one foot (although it can be present in both feet at the same time)
- Heel Pain which is most painful in the morning right when you get out of bed after taking your first steps of the day. Also worse after long periods of standing or sitting.
- Pain which feels like a stab in the bottom of your foot, or as if you are barefoot and just stepped on a rock right on your heel bone.
Heel Pain Causes
Causes of Plantar Fasciitis
Heel Pain Causes
- Overuse - too much exercising, not enough rest
- Faulty biomechanics - your walking or running gait is just "out of whack" causing undue stress on your plantar fascia tissue
- Bad Shoes - wearing shoes without enough arch support. Or wearing high heels often.
- Obesity - too much weight on your feet, including your plantar fascia, is a recipe for all kinds of problems, including heel pain
- Your Job - having a job where you stand all day on a hard surface can cause plantar fasciitis
- Women are more likely than men to develop plantar fasciitis
- People aged 40-60 are more likely to develop plantar fasciitis

Heel Pain Treatment
Treatment Plantar Fasciitis
- 1Wear a Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint - This is the treatment option that BY FAR gives me the most relief immediately. However it should be used in conjunction with these other plantar fasciitis treatments. There are many types of night splints for plantar fasciitis on the market, readily available to order online. Personally, I've had the most success with the Body Armor Darco Night Splint after trying a few other models. This one has by far been the most comfortable to use and gives me good relief from my heel pain.
- 2Rest - If you are an avid walker, runner, hiker, or athletic participant, take some time off. A little rest goes a long way.
- 3Stretch - Stand on the edge of a set of stairs and let your heels drop down, stretching your calves and Achilles tendon. Perform this stretch once with your toes facing straight ahead, once with your toes pointed in, and once with your toes pointed out.
- 4Ice - Fill a small dixie cup with water and put it in your freezer. Every evening, take the dixie cup, unwrap the top inch section of the cup, exposing the ice. Holding the cup, massage the ice on your heel, using the cup as a barrier for your hand from getting too cold.
- 5Plantar Fasciitis Shoes Wear proper cushioned shoes with good arch support. Do NOT wear sandals, flip flops, or high heels. Custom orthotics may also help to support your arch and distribute your weight more evenly.
- 6Use orthotics or heel cups for adding cushioning to your shoes
- 7Maintain a proper weight

This is the Night Split that I personally use, and I've been very happy with it. First of all, it's comfortable to wear all night. I've tried some others that were made out of a neoprene type material and my foot would get so hot at night that I couldn't wear it. Not so with this Darco Night Splint. It's very comfortable. It can be worn on either foot. It tightens with velco, making it easy to fit to your foot. It also comes with a detactable toe strap that you can use to get an even better stretch of your plantar fascia. The toe strap attaches with velcro also, so you can switch it to whichever side your big toe is on. However, the toe strap attaches to little hooks which are in the middle of the boot, making your toe turn a little inward. I wish they would have made the hooks on either side, straight up from where your big toe would be when wearing it on both the right and the left side. Personally, I find the toe strap gives me too much stretch and causes me to wake up in the middle of night, so I choose not to use it at all. It's just attached by velco, so it's easily removable if you choose not to use it. But beyond that, this is by far the best night splint that I've tried (I've tried about 3 others and didn't like them for one reason or another....too hot, hurt my toes, kept me up at night....). I know this night splint is a bit more expensive than the others, but in my opinion its well worth the money. I started out by buying cheaper versions, which I wasn't happy with, and ended up upgrading to this.

When you are shopping for a shoe, sandal, or insole you want to buy one that has good arch support plus has plenty of heel cushioning. The heel cushioning will help relieve some of the pain of plantar fasciitis. But the pain in your heel is just a symptom. The real problem is that the arch doesn't have enough support, and therefore the plantar fascia is getting inflamed and irritated, causing heel pain where the plantar fascia connects to the heel bone.
One brand of shoes that offers both good cushioning in the heel, as well as good arch support is the Orthaheel Brand. The even make sandals and shoe insoles.
