Nirvana - "Bleach" Classic Album Review: The Birth of Grunge!
Ranked #18,964 in Music, #569,197 overall
Why "Bleach" is a classic
I believe that this is a great album. If you liked Nevermind, you will hopefully like this too. It's also a great insight into the birth of a genre, and shows off Kurt Cobain's early writing talents along with the passion in all of the performances.
Classic Album Review: Nirvana - "Bleach" (1989)
Although a little known album prior to their hugely successful follow up "Nevermind" in 1991, Bleach still stands up as a powerful album in its own right today. This would be a must have album for any fans of Nirvana and indeed the genre as a whole. In comparison to its successor, both the album's production, and also the lyrical content on Bleach are far less polished. Several songs consist of a single verse which is simply repeated. In fact "School" has only fifteen words! However this is not immediately noticeable as there are still the catchy riffs in evidence along with the intense, passionate vocals from Kurt Cobain, who wrote the whole album, with just one exception. The only cover on Bleach was "Love Buzz", which was also the first single ever to be released by Nirvana. However, this bears little resemblance to the original by Shocking Blue. The riff used in this song has a Far Eastern feel to it, and it is almost impossible in my opinion not to get absorbed in the music instantly. The same feeling (if not the Eastern guitar riff) applies to much of the album. The B side of the single ("Big Cheese") also appears on Bleach.
Bleach also shows off Kurt Cobain's songwriting talent particularly well with the inclusion of "About a Girl", which gained wider popularity when performed on Nirvana's Unplugged session on MTV in 1993. However, this didn't fit with the formula used in the rest of Bleach, as all the other songs were very heavy on guitars and drums with Kurt Cobain's vocals being an exhilarating blend of angst ridden wails and screams. However, About a Girl was much more melodic and a beautifully crafted example of what Kurt Cobain's songwriting skills already were, and what Nirvana was yet to become.
In conclusion, if you liked Nevermind, then you would probably also enjoy Bleach. Be warned though, this album has a much more raw and heavy sound overall, although Kurt Cobain's skill as a songwriter is obvious plus the compelling performances of each song are unforgettable. This is one of the most memorable and unique albums of the eighties. This certainly counts as a classic and deserves to be recognised as such.
