Traveler, Blogger, Software Engineer and a whole lot more

Welcome, This is the very first lens I created, at the beginning it just has some informal information and links to my blogs. Then after spending some time in SquidU forum and looking at some other great lensography, I decided to revamp this one. When you join Squidoo the very first lens you're encouraged to create is a lens about you, the logic being that's the subject you're most knowledgeable about, but when I started writing it, I found out its not the easiest task in the world. During the last 27 years I managed to live an exciting life, I managed to travel all over Sri Lanka and few other countries like Sweden and Denmark. I managed to get a great job as a Software Engineer and with Squidoo, HubPages and my own blog I'm able to pursue my passion for writing and making money online. During that time I manage to survive three life threatening incidents and those are mentioned below. What I learned from those incidents is....

"You start to appreciate what you have, only when you come close to losing them all"

Surviving 11,000V

Surviving 11,000V

First of my life threatening experiences. This happened when myself and mom were trying to adjust the antenna. It was somewhat heavy, we lost control and the antenna hit the 11,000V high tension wires nearby. I could see the current flowing around my body and I will never forget that experience. The only reason I'm alive and making lenses today is because the pole of the antenna melted because of the heat, and it got disconnected. I managed to survive with some burn marks in my hand. My mom was not that lucky, she couldn't move her hands for close to two months and she only recovered after some Ayurveda treatment. She is fine now. Above is an image I created, I guess you can judge my artistic skills by that.

Surviving a tsunami

Then I managed to survive a tsunami. In 2004 after the first wave there was a sudden dip in water levels and you could go very far towards the sea. As most Sri Lankans I was curious and went as far as I could. That's when the second wave came. I was caught up in the waves but managed to survive by clinging on to a rock. You can get an idea how devastating it is by watching the below video. More than 40,000 died that day and some bodies were never found :(

One of the scariest moments of my life

I apologize for the video quality but this is the only video I have. This was during my visit to Habarana National park. We were attacked by an elephant ( the notorious "Kane Hila", loosely translated to English it means elephant with a hole in his ear ) , there were six of us in the jeep and most of us escaped with small injuries. The guy who was holding the camera ended up with lots of bruises.

Just before the Elephant attack

This was a picture taken just before the Elephant attack, you can rarely get this close to wild Elephants in a national park , you need a brave and a willing driver, plus some extra cash ;)

I'm from Sri Lanka

Pearl of the Indian Ocean

I'm from the beautiful island nation of Sri Lanka, one of the most popular tourist destination in the world and which was chosen as the second best travel destination in the world by National Geographic. Before 2009 the country was troubled by terrorist activities, with LTTE terrorists ruling parts of the Northern and Eastern provinces. There was a time when bombs were going off in buses and innocent civilians were getting killed. There were three bus bombs within one week on the route I take to office. The LTTE were defeated in 2009 and now there is peace in the country and tourism is prospering again. It really is a beautiful country with lots of biodiversity, geographical diversity and cultural diversity. Beautiful beaches and various national parks are some of the major tourist attractions. Check out the below lenses to get an idea about my beautiful country.

I work at IFS ( Industrial and Financial Systems )

I work as a Software Engineer at IFS Colombo office. They granted me a scholarship to do my higher studies and I had valuable industrial experience with them while doing my degree program. I mainly work with Oracle, C# and a lesser known language called Centura. I have being working there for more than 7 years now and it was a great experience with many great people.

Academic Achievements

I went to St. Peter' College in Wellawatta up to my advance level classes and for higher studies I attended Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT ). Attending classes was not my thing but I managed to get a B.Sc Degree from Curtin University of Australia and a Honors Degree in IT from SLIIT. I had a great time at SLIIT, mostly playing Basket Ball. I was lucky to be involved in some great projects as well, one of the projects I was involved in won

  • Gold Medal in National Best Quality Software Awards in 2007 Tertiary category

  • Best use of Microsoft Technologies in same award ceremony

  • Gold Medal in Asia Pacific Information and Communication Technology Awards in 2007

Another scary thing at Sunway Lagoon, you are thrown up suddenly and when you are seeing the ground you start to wonder why did I do this :-)
