Sudarshan Kriya - It made me feel good about myself and the world around me.
Sudarshan Kriya is a sanskrit language word. Su means 'proper', Darshan means 'Vision'. Kriya means action or practice. So Sudarshan Kriya means the practice that gives you proper vision. And it really does that.
I started doing 'Sudarshan Kriya' about 4 years back. I participated in a basic course conducted by "Art of Living foundation'. It is a breathing technique developed by Sri Sri Ravishankar, refered as 'Guruji' by the followers.
During the course I learnt to do 'Sudarshan Kriya'. And that has made my life better. I am more aware of myself, more confident, more focused.
Before attending the course I was not particularly unhappy about my life. I had lived life the way it had happened. I had just flowed with it. After the course I felt I could live the life I want. I felt more in control. Earlier I accepted life because there was no other way to live. I just flowed with the flow. After the course I accepted it by my own will.
I just felt I started living in a better way after the course. This doesn't mean that I attained nirvana or anything. But I feel I have found the way to it. I know I still have a long way to go. But it is wonderful to know I have found where I want to go instead of wondering which way to go and just wandering around. It also feels good to feel a kind of peace with myself, within me
Why I joined and What we did during the course.
Sudarshan Kriya is Rhythmic breathing. It finds the rhythm to your body and mind too.
When I joined the basic course, I joined with an open mind. I was not expecting anything special. Just wanted to see what it was all about.
I enjoyed the interactive course. It was for 5 days, 2 and a half hour per day. The last day, Sunday was for 6 hours.
During this time, we all played games, listened, talked, asked questions, meditated, did a few physical exercises. What I liked was the relaxed way we did everything. There was no compulsion to sit on the floor cross legged. Those who couldn't had chairs. There were also lots of cushions to make you comfortable. The atmosphere was relaxed. Everyday we were given a few questions to think about. We were supposed to write the answers. These questions made me think about my life, my attitudes towards life and the people in it.
There was no compulsion to make me change the way I lived my life but just the awareness about it. If I chose to make a change, it was up to me. But I think just becoming aware made a lot of difference to me.
What is Sudarshan Kriya? What can it do for you.
Most people who did the basic course experience this.
This unique breathing practice is a potent energizer. Every cell becomes fully oxygenated and flooded with new life. Negative emotions that have been stored as toxins in the body are easily uprooted and flushed out. Tension, frustrations and anger are released and anxiety, depression and lethargy are washed away.
After the practice one is left calm and centered with a clearer vision of the world and oneself. A sense of joy in the moment prevails where once again we can smile from our hearts. And when we feel good about ourselves, love flows naturally in all our relationships with others.
*Sudarshan Kriya can help you get over depression.
*Make you healthier.
*You feel more energetic.
*You have more energy to get more done during the day.
*You sleep better.
*You have better relationships.
*You look at life and experience life in a more positive way.
*You become more creative.
*Your mind becomes clearer.
Others have experienced this and what is more important for me is that I experienced it too.
I feel more energy. I am more focused and I am sure you will understand how important it is to be focused with whatever you choose to do. You get things done, not just try to do them and get distracted by other things.
For every feeling and emotion, there is a corresponding breathing rhythm. You have experienced it. Just observe your breath as you go through your day. You breath slow and steady when calm and peaceful. You breath fast when angry etc.
So by adding / following specific natural rhythm while breathing you can learn to release stress and bring your mind in the present and keep it there.
The First Time I did Sudarshan Kriya.
Then a casette was started in Guruji's voice where he chanted a few words in that rhythm. He has a kind of feminine and peaceful voice. We followed with breathing along with him with our eyes closed. As he changed the rhythm of his chant, so did our breathing. We may have done that for about 10 minutes. It may have been more or less. I am not sure. As it ended and I lay down, I felt a kind of vibrations through my whole body. Was it my imagination, I do not know. All I can say that it felt wonderful.
We were advised to continue doing the Kriya for 48 days. I was able to do that. I still do kriya every morning, well, almost every morning.
I have noticed that I am more peaceful, more balanced, more energetic the whole day. I sleep better. I have a kind of cheerful attitude about life. I am more focused.
Just before starting Sudarshan kriya everyday
I do these exercises.
The exercises help to relax the body, to remove any stiffness in the joints. Even on days I don't do any other exercises, I like to do these. I find these are good to start a day. After a first few days, doing these becomes second nature.
1. First stand straight. Rotate both hands first in the forward circular motion and then in the backward motion. Breath in while the hands go up and breath out while the hands come down. Do it 3-5 times.
2. Rotate the head in a circular motion, first starting from left to right and then right to left.
3.
A few thoughts as expressed by Sri Sri Ravishankar.
* The mind is like the wave and the Soul is like the ocean. And the connection between the two is that the mind cannot be without the soul, but the soul can exist without the mind. So in meditation you drop the mind, you become one with the totality that is the ocean. Therefore there are both existing together, the mind as well as the soul, like the wave as well as the ocean.
*We can communicate in silence very well. We can communicate through our hearts very well...There is so much beauty we are missing in our life if we have not lived in that area of silence within us.

Hi Nayana, Nice Sudarshan Kriya lens. I've enjoyed various yoga practices for years. You might upload a pic to your intro module so that it shows up when you sign a guestbook. I added Carnatic classical music to my list of music genres. Thanx for the suggestion. ~Music Resource~
