The evolution of music in a lifetime
When I first started listening to, and collecting music, I was a teenager in the 1970's. Like most of my friends, I saved money to buy singles and albums - all made of vinyl. I had a little record player, and would spend hours listening to my records. We collected them and swapped them, and I amassed quite a collection that traveled with me everywhere I lived. In fact, I still have my album collection even though I haven't had a record player for many years.
In high school, records became 8 tracks, later changed to cassettes..................again, my collection of music continued to grow, albeit in a much different format.
Then, in the 1980's, we were introduced to the CD - compact disc, and music again took on a completely different format, requiring yet another type of electronic device in order to listen to it. I began collecting CD's and bought an expensive CD player to replace my stereo/cassette player.
Now, music is invisible.......................digital music flows from our computers to our little MP3 players. No tangible disc to hold, no shelves of collections of music.
This lens is devoted to music, old and new.........and to all of us music lovers, old and young. Hang onto to your collection of music, in whatever form it may be...........

For the digital neophyte - A few definitions
(or what do all these initials really mean?)
If you are not a member of the "I grew up always having a computer" generation, then you, like me, may not know what all the current cyber-abbreviations mean. MPEG - 1. Any of a set of standards established for the compression of digital video and audio data.
2. A file of digital video and audio data that has been so compressed: downloaded an MPEG of the new video from the Internet.
iPOD - The generic brand iPod refers to a class of portable digital audio players designed and marketed by Apple Computer. (Hewlett-Packard also markets the product under the name Apple iPod + HP.) Devices in the iPod family offer a simple user interface designed around a central scroll wheel. Most iPod models store media on a built-in hard drive, while a lower-end model, iPod shuffle, relies on flash memory. ...

download - Download means "receive." You can download many kinds of files from the Internet, including images and software.
DVD - Short for digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a type of optical disk technology similar to the CD-ROM. A DVD holds a minimum of 4.7GB of data, enough for a full-length movie. DVDs are commonly used as a medium for digital representation of movies and other multimedia presentations that combine sound with graphics
