The Hobby of Card Collecting
You can start small by maybe collecting just one player, team sets or even complete sets. You might like the look of new cards with all there gloss and 3D effects, from all the inserts, Parallels, jerseys, gloves, sticks, bats, pucks, balls, autographs and numbered cards out there. And then one day you open a pack find that card numbered 1 of 1 in the whole world! And you scream inside or maybe outloud "YAHOO"
Or you may just find that vintage cards to are up your ally. With the thrill of finding the cards to fill the voids in your old sets. Or maybe its the rough edges, bad colors or just the off centering. Or it's the thrill of holding something in you hand knowing its 50 or 60 years old and knowing the history and that the value will at the very least stay the same. But deep down inside you know that the little peace of cardboard in you hand will no doubt go up in value. And you scream inside or maybe outloud "YAHOO"
Some of the first cards issued were from the tobacco companies. Some came in a tallboy format others minis cards. In hockey some of the 1st sets had titles like - 1910/1911 C56 with 36 cards and a book value of $10,000.00 or 1923/1924 V145-1 with 40 cards and a book value of $12,000.00. Baseball is similar, 1909-T206, 523 cards with the average of $100.00 pre a card or 1911-T205, with 218 cards and a book value of $35,000.00
You don't have to start big to get the joy out of this great hobby and to share with your children, family and friends will give you joy that is pricless!

Buy A Guide
The 1st thing you should do "Buy A Guide"
I have one rule for what ever hobby I'm playing with. That rule is "Buy A Guide"Guides like Canadian Sports Collector (CSC) or Beckett have a wealth of information. Beckett as an example has a large guide around four times a year. With almost 575,000 priced cards for the newest Hockey Card Plus its easy to find even those five and ten cent cards in your collection. There is a guide for almost everything that is collectable. The CSC to me is an amazing guide as they carry so many different collectibles in one edition from of course sport cards, bobble heads, coins, food offered cards, plates, stubs, magazines and this list could on and on.
Now the best part about buying a guide is the article's inside them. They will tell you about up and coming products, product reviews, interviews, what's hot and what's not and which player you should be putting you money on.
There's one more good reason to buy a guide. If you ever consider selling your cards on eBay or any other site you will not make the mistake so many other new sellers do. I have seen new sellers trying to sell $5.00 worth of cards with a starting price of $100.00. Not only is the price way off they have all the bells and whistles in there listing from many images and bolding of text and so on. From experience these sellers lost money due to all the fees they incurred for having such a listing and lack of knowledge!

Example of a graded card

O-Pee-Chee, graded by SCG NM/MT 88 or 8
The grading of collector cards
As time goes on more and more cards are being counterfeited so high end cards like Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Honus Wagner and Mickey Mentle rookie cards just to name a few need to be graded if you want to sell them. As of now you cannot sell these rookie cards on eBay unless they are graded! Below is pretty much the industry standard on the grading of cards.Mint (MT) No flaws. Four perfect corners, 55/45 or better centering, smooth edges, original color borders and gloss, no print spots, color or focus imperfections
Near Mint-Mint (NRMT-MT) Must have 60/40 or better centering, smooth edges, original color borders and gloss. One of the following very minor flaws is allowed, a slight touch of wear on one corner, barley noticeable print spots, color or focus imperfections
Near Mint (NM) Centering of 70/30 to 60/40. In addition one of the following minor flaws is allowed, a slight touch of wear on two or three corners, slightly rough edges, minor print spots, color or focus imperfections
Excellent-Mint (EXMT) Centering no worse then 80/20. No more then two of the following flaws are allowed, two or three fuzzy corners, slightly rough edges, very minor border discoloration, minor print spots, color or focus imperfections
Excellent (EX) Centering no worse then 80/20 with four fuzzy corners. May also have rough edges, minor border discoloration and minor print spots, color or focus imperfections
Very Good (VG) Handled but not abused. Slightly rounded corners with slight layering, slight notching on edges, moderate border discoloration, some gloss lost from the surface but no scuffing. May have hairline creases
Good (G), Fair (F), Poor (P)
Well-worn or abused. Badly rounded corners, scuffing, original gloss, major border discoloration and serious creases
5 Most Used Card Grading Companies
Again don't forget to use the first rule "Buy a Hobby Guide"Listed below are five companies that are
considered most reliable:
(PSA) Professional Sports Authenticator
(BGS) Beckett Grading Services
(SGC) Sportscard Guaranty Corporation
(GAI) Global Authentication Inc.
(KSA) Canadaian Sports Authenticator
Each are a little different, but offer similar scales of grading and good protection of the cards as well as accurate and consistent grading.
Lets go to the hobby shop and buy some cards!
Just not the same old hobby...
Today's cards are not like it use to be when you could buy a pack of 10 cards and get a stick of bubble gum for $0.10. You can find many different brands from a starting price of around $3.00 pre a pack all the way up to $400.00 PER A PACK or more (that's for 4 cards in one pack). In some ways in has become very much like a lottery. At present theirs only one company that is licensed by the NHL, NHLPA to sell Hockey cards. That company is Upperdeck which has the market tied down. You may be asking yourself, what the heck can you get for $400.00 pre a pack? Well theirs always a chance of pulling a Sidney Crosby Rookie autograph patch card (part of his jersey) and then sell it for $15,000.00
Now I have been talking about hockey cards but this is the same for all sports. Here are some videos which are known as bust a box. It can be so exciting to pull something that can buy you a car!
