Human Nose Prints on Store Windows Spark Questions about Animal Noses

I started wondering about nose prints when I noted all the human nose prints on the big window at Kilwin's confectionary on St Armands Circle in Sarasota, Florida. When the shop starts making fudge, passersby crowd at the window to watch.

Needless to say, we fudge-making voyeurs create quite a business for window washers.

That set me wondering about animal nose prints.

I learned that recording nose prints makes a popular way to identify livestock and pets. The system seems to work rather well for cows, lambs and goats. The agricultural service even posts YouTube videos to show you how.

Many people think that dog noses are as unique as human finger prints and that nose prints can be used for identification.

Yes, that big black nose looks unique all right!

However, I recommend sticking with microchips and tattoos. Those methods offer a way for someone to find a pet's human. The nose print method seems devoid of a central database so I can't figure out how the person who finds your dog would find his human!

A Valid Way to Identify Your Dog?

The premise seems plausible that you could use a dog's nose print to identify a pet similar to using finger printing to identify humans. After checking around, I agree with WikiAnswers that nose prints change and, probably the biggest argument against this identification method, there's no central databank for the prints. By the way, the Canadian Kennel Club requires microchips or tattoos.
