"An Idiot's Guide To Idiopathic Neuropathy"

Idiopathic Neuropathy isn't just for idiots anymore. You are a member of a very elite social group. I will try to cover areas of concern like: Phantom Pain, Nerve Damage, Electrical Jolts, Today it Tingles, Tomorrow it's Numb. Life and times of dealing with this form of Neuropathy.

What's Happening To My Body?

Dr. House Can I Get Your Diagnosis Please...

Plain and simple - Idiopathic neuropathy is a form of neuropathy that all the best specialists in the world can't figure out. They know what it is, but not what causes it. The word "idiopathic" means "cause unknown". It's interesting how the word has "idiot" in it, isn't it?

There are various types of neuropathy. Idiopathic peripheral neuropathy is a form of nerve damage in which usually the symptoms start in the feet and lower legs with numbness and tingling, or a "pins and needles" sensation. It attacks the small nerve fibers near the surface of the skin, which is why the symptoms deal with sensation and touch. It is progressive, which makes it more difficult to diagnose. Diagnosis is really just a process of elimination. If a person if not diabetic, has not been exposed to toxins, shows no toxins in blood tests, or has not had a trauma injury to the affected area, then it's called "idiopathic".

The symptoms are insensitivity to heat and/or cold, tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, cramps, pain, and other symptoms. People describe the pain as an ice pick being poked into bone, like an electric shock, or walking on broken glass. Sometimes the pain causes a loss in the ability to feel when injury occurs, so one may be bleeding or have a skin injury and not even know it. Ulcerations caused by a small skin injury or by pressure and left untreated, with slow healing added to the situation, are the reason most lower extremity amputations take place.

Unfortunately it is a disorder diagnosed by ruling out everything else. In fact, electromyography (EMG tests), which is good in diagnosing other neuropathies, doesn't do as well in detecting small fiber neuropathies. In some cases it can be diagnosed by biopsy, but that would still not affect treatment of the symptoms. Sometimes the disorder is caused by diabetes or alcoholism, but most of the time it is idiopathic. Since there are no known causes for most cases and most tests do not identify it, not much money is spent on curing idiopathic cases.

There is no current treatment to cure small fiber peripheral neuropathy. There is only treatment of the symptoms. Treatment includes nutritional supplements, compression socks, physical therapy, analgesics, capsaicin creams, low doses of antidepressants, and some anticonvulsant medications that may be prescribed for relief of pain, burning, or tingling.

Ok so I'm shameless,I wanted to be the first one to say something about my new Squidoo site. I've never made one of these before and it was fairly easy to do. My knowledge database is still intact, so it only makes sense to make a few coins while shareing it.

About PixFix

I call myself PixFix, my friends call me Tony. My photo to the left has been digitally altered.

I presently live in the Great Northwest. The South Puget Sound area, near the rolling foothills of Mt. Rainier.

I'm Pre-AARP, a Phase II Boomer or as my generation has been called the "Joneser's".

I'm new to Squidoo and a lot of Web 2.0 stuff.

So my lensses will be about things I have a strong passion for and the oddly curious emails I recieve daily. The research I do, I believe is quite thorough, I am only limited by the space that is provided.

I hope you will find my lensses both enjoyable & informative. Please pass these on to everyone in your address book.

Thank You, and may you live your life in peace.....
