Nurse Practitioners in Business

Ranked #20,312 in Education, #418,586 overall

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

As a Nurse Practitioner, you've been educated to work in a variety of situations and locations - truly work situation or location was left unexplored. Except for one...owning your own business or practice. In graduate school, very few NPs were exposed to the idea of becoming an Nurse Practitioner Entrepreneur, yet for many NPs this is a dream yet to be verbalized and realized. Of all NP practicing in the US today, it is estimated that only 4% actually own their own practice, yet we know there are countless others that are seeking information and a means to do just that.

It is well known that there is a shortage of health care providers, especially prinary care providers, in the US today. That shortage is estimated to reach epic porportions in the next 20 years. Nurse Practitioner entrepreneurs can and will meet some of that need.

Communicating with Patients, the Newest Media

It is undeniable that both new, and seasoned nurses lack knowledge in marketing. There are lots of ways to market a practice. You could have newspaper write-ups, flyers, or could simply be in the book. Majority of us however, get referrals from people within the same industry like insurance companies or colleagues. But the most important thing to know is that a big role is played in most practices and business by a web site.

I'm in a rural area and didn't realize that my homemade website would be found and recognized. But I was stunned at how many local people find me, and know about our office before getting to the actual visit.

With a website, you create a connection between you and your prospective clients. You build an easier media for them to find you, and find out about you. They get to learn about what you do, and even what you specialize. This beats word of mouth.

So your website should have:

News: Current health concerns or programs
Questions: Questions and answers on what they would likely ask, or ability to search for their condition.
Form: Registration, Health History and other pertinent forms available for download.
Staff: Information about you and your staff that will build rapport before they even enter your clinic.

Always keep in mind. You should make sure that you are speaking to your ideal client or patient. Invite and connect with them to your office through your website.
