WHY I SUPPORT THE ONE CAMPAIGN
"for lack of a medicine you can get at any chemist for less than 25p"
5/13/89 - my son's Jeffrey's birthday. also the day he died. after 13 years of infertility, 9 in fertility treatments. i had an infection that if properly diagnosed, a simple antibiotic that costs less than 25p a day found at my local chemist. . sound familiar?my son would have had a very good chance. my son Joey, born two years later, same infection treated and he's 16 now. but Jeffrey . . . i find him in the arms of every mother in extreme poverty who lays their little ones to eternal rest, or maybe the mother passes and they are left to suckle another's breast. they mourn and miss each other as much as i miss my son. for lack of a dose of meds that costs less than 25 pence . . .
so DATA & ONE come along to give me a chance to use my voice and heart which is more plentious and satisfying than using my thin checkbook. i find myself bold, confident, empowered on africa's citizen's behalf to do what i can to make their value and needs embraced by my politicians and peers, knowing that we americans have paid our taxes and have every right and responsibility to lobby on how and where spent. that many non-profits, faithbased and otherwise, can work together on the same platform at the same time in pursuit of the Millenium Development Goals, that knowledge brings responsibility to not only be fact-checked but acted upon, that we pursue this because it's a matter of justice, not charity.
unlike the world of celebrity and fortune where the velvet ropes divide us and the food chain is vast from one end to another, here we stand side by side as equal and valuable members of this campaign. those at the top influence our leaders and press down, while we the constituents lobby them and press up, bringing trade, aid, debt relief, and global health to the forefront of budgetary and human rights considerations. i truly believe that the ground is level at the foot of the cross.
ONE can be contagious as success breeds success. some days to me it's more steps back than forward . . . at times my mind wants to go home my heart won't let me. my ONE band has become a form of wedding band to a work i'm committed to . . . . my (red) africa pin has become a prayer bead on my rosary. like my wedding band they're promises i've made in my heart.
Bono & Bob Geldof developed the world's 2nd largest online lobbying group and brought a few million friends with them. my 30 year love for africa is now in excellent company!
stay close,
sammi =)
My favorite websites
- ONE Vote '08
- Mobilizing Voters to Save Lives and Secure our Future
ONE Vote '08 is an unprecedented, bi-partisan campaign to make global health and extreme poverty foreign policy priorities in the 2008 presidential election.
This is the official site ONE has dedicated to the Vote '08 Campaign. now that we are down to a few candidates, see where they stand on the issues important to us on the war on extreme poverty and hungry in Africa. here you can sign up to volunteer, watch the launch video, read news pertinent to Vote '08, and my favorite feature is the candidate tracker. - Sign the ONE Declaration
- Join the millions of Americans taking a stand against poverty. we can exercise our democracy, using our voice for the world's poor who have no voice. You've already paid the money in your taxes, you have a right, and may i suggest a responsibility, to make cynicism history and voice respectfully how you would like the taxes to be spent. contact us if we can help in your advocacy.
- The ONE Blog
- Keep updated in the global fight against extreme poverty. check in often, things change quickly.
- ONE's MySpace
- Friend Us
- RESULTS
- "creating the public and political will to end hunger and the worst aspects of poverty."
This organization works with our congress and senate on specific issues of global health and poverty, and writes editors and publications to inform them and the public on the issues. 2007 issues are XRD-TB (extremely drug resistant tuberculosis), microcredit (Nobel Prize winner Mohammed Yunus is on our board of directors), and education for all. - RESULTS Canada
- This is the Canadian RESULTS link for my friends to the north . . . . a wonderful work they are doing in this country, i've met many of these amazing people.
30,000 children die from the effects of extreme poverty everyday, know the facts, and take action. RESULTS Canada is busy continually reminding leaders that they are one of the 181 countries that have signed on to meeting the Millenium Development Goals by 2015. - Jubilee 2000 - Drop the Debt Campaign
- in 1997 this group approached Bono to help them lobby on behalf of the highly indebted poor countries, who pay back many times over their annual budgets on interest to the west alone. over 38 countries have received this forgiveness based on DATA's conditions of accountability, women's and children's rights, education and food and medicine for their citizens. this year we are lobbying for Liberia, who is africa's first republic and under President Ellen Johnson-Sirleif is a potential light in the region, and Haiti. both are HIPC (highly indebted poor countries) who qualify for debt relief, but our lobbying can bring this to pass sooner, saving them hundreds of millions of dollars in interest on the loans to the west. loans incurred generations ago by warlords and dictators who kept the money for themselves who are no longer in power.
- Bread for the World
- this awesome faith-based organization works with the ONE campaign as well as with Farm Bill issues including both domestic and non-domestic funding.
- (red)
- can a t-shirt save a life? oh yes! entire product lines by partners such as GAP, Converse, Apple (ipod), Motorola, Armani, a Dell computer and HP printer, are committing to a five year agreement of giving, not charity, but giving a generous portion of each product's suggested retail price straight to The Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. this is not a charity, it's commerce for the extreme poor.
- African Well Fund - Bono's Birthday Well Fund
- What do you give a rockstar for his birthday? how about a well in an extemely poor location in africa. for the last five years that's what Bono has been gifted with each May 15th, to build freshwater wells in extreme regions of the land he loves. and after contributing, a note can be added to a birthday journal that is presented to him at this time too. a practical way to express birthday wishes and appreciation for this man who has inspired us to attempt great things for the extreme poor in africa.
- DATA
- this is an amazing information resource for the work we are doing in ONE. The granddaddy, the keeper of the serious matters, the DATA report is one of the best evenings a person could spend, imho.
- Music Rising
- restoring musical instruments back into region of New Orleans. hopefully after we build iraq we can get serious about rebuilding new orleans . . .
- The John Legend Show Me Campaign
- This is a partner campaign to the Millenium Promise campaign, based on his beautiful song that charts a conversation with God about the state of the world. where fans of John Legend can take action and make a direct impact on the lives of extreme poor in africa, such as a purchase of a bednet for a family. please check it out.
- ONE on Facebook
- This is a wonderful cause at Facebook, a great community, if on Facebook please consider adding this group. it is admined by ONE, it's the official one. =)
- Puget Sound Millennium Development Goals Project
- in early 2007, a group of like-minded active members of various global poverty relief agencies working on the satisfaction of the MDG's came together to provide opportunties to showcase and educate the public and encourage them to promote their attainment. we hold public forums with congressional leaders and heads of groups making progress in this massive undertaking. Letters to the editors are submitted on specific current topics. we work closely with the United Nations Association here in Seattle.
We are a group of organizations committed to achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Project is mounting a high-profile, region-wide, long term collaborative effort in support of the MDGs by involving a wide range of partners: non-governmental organizations, corporate entities, education institutions, churches, and individuals. - facebook profile
