Oil of Oregano - A Natural Antibiotic

Extracted from the plant Origanum vulgare, oil of oregano is high in antioxidants, and known to bring many health benefits to those who use it. Origanum vulgare should not be confused with the common type of oregano we use to season Italian and Greek foods (Origanum majorana), although they are related.

Pressed from the leaves of the plant, oil of oregano contains thymol and carvacrol, which are thought to be the main ingredients that provide the benefitsof  oregano oil. Oregano oil cures mild stomach problems, helps clear coughs, works to kill fungus, heals digestive ailments, provides relief for migraine headaches, relieves athletes foot and sore throats, and helps with breathing difficulties. It's even known to have a very positive effect on dandruff, and can promote healing of other skin conditions. Oregano oil is also thought to help maintain a healthy immune system and keep joints and muscles flexible.

Because of its antibiotic properties, researchers are looking to oil of oregano as a possible avenue for heading off the antibiotic resistance that recently emerging "superbugs" like MRSA are demonstrating. It seems that drug resistance does not occur against naturally occurring antibiotics, such as those found in oil of oregano.

Using Oil of Oregano

Oil of oregano comes in liquid form, but you cannot just drink it straight - it's far too potent for that. The most commonly recommended way to consume it is to use a dropper and put 4 to 5 drops in a gel capsule (these are also available without gelatin for vegetarians/vegans), and then swallow the capsule. Another method is to dilute 4 or 5 drops in a glass of water and drink it that way. If you are using it for skin problems or dandruff, mix 10 to 20 drops with 8 ounces of a good lotion or your favorite shampoo. Oil of oregano is strong - don't get it in your eyes and keep it away from children, just as you would any medicine, natural or otherwise. Be sure to follow directions and use with care.

Buying Oil of Oregano

When buying oil of oregano, it is important to be certain that you are purchasing pure, not diluted, oil. You also need to make sure that you are getting oil from the plant that ends with vulgare in its name. This is the type that contains thymol and carvacrol, the ingredients that work against all the ailments listed above. Whether you are purchasing online or from a store, be sure that the seller is reputable and do a bit of comparison-shopping even. Keep in mind that the lowest priced oil may not be the best product (but it might be), and that the highest price doesn't necessarily mean the highest quality, either.
