Reading the news our ancestors read

Genealogy is my hobby and one of the greatest parts of that is reading old newspapers for obituaries and interesting articles about my ancestors.

I have collected a great many of these little tidbits of news from long ago and decided to make a lens to highlight these.

Perhaps there are others out there who also like to read some of the interesting and at times, funny bits of old news.

Thank you for visiting & please don't forget to sign the guest book, let me know if you enjoyed this lens.

Oh! One more thing-- please vote for me! (see the stars at the top of the page, below the title)

Sherry :-)

Obit of William Barton, 15 Apr 1840

Obit Transcription:

..Died, on Friday the 11th inst. near this city, Mr. Wm Barton, aged 58 years. ( born about 1782)
..Mr. Barton was a native of South Carolina, and moved to the state of Alabama during the wars with the Indians in 1816 and '17. From that state he came to Texas. His whole life has been spent on the frontier, and he has been aptly styled the Daniel Boone of Texas. He has seen many hair breath escapes and a narrative of his life would form a very interesting biography. He removed to the place where he died, about three years ago. It was then twelve miles above the highest settlers on the east of the Colorado, and on the west there was not another person for more than forty miles. The Indians frequently surrounded his house and have take a few shots at him--he has always contended that he should never be murdered by an Indian.
..In his manner he was frank and confiding, and died not only lamented by his old companions upon the frontier, but by all who have become acquainted with him, since the rapid settlement and improvement of the country around him. He was emphatically an honest and an upright man.

Are you a cemetery photographer or genealogist?

You never know what sort of reception you will have when you are a volunteer headstone phhotographer.

Sometimes the staff at the cemtery office are more than happy to help you with a grave location, other times, they can act like you are from the IRS.

Before you visit a cemetery to fulfill a photo request or if you are a genealogist visiting a cemetery, check to see if someone has submitted a review.

Most of the time, the reviews are excellent, but wouldn't you like to know before you walked into a bad experience?

Most of the cemeteries having a review at this time are from the Harris County, Texas area but as more volunteer photographers submit their reviews, other counties and states will be covered.

Why not submit a review for a cemetery you have photograped? Help out another photographer or genealogist. It's free and easy.

Just visit Cemetery and Funeral Home Reviews and fill out the form at the bottom and click submit. That's all there is to it and you 'll be helping others. Only your first name and the state where you live will be used when your review is posted.

Sheriff Bob Green, mentioned in the clipping, passed away in 1934 so this clipping is at least as old as 1934. The hayday for Milvid was 1925 so it is also possible this incident took place in the 1920's.

Transcription of article:
Chattanooga, Tenn. Sepetember 30. - Secretary Alger has telegraphed to the Ste?berg hospital authorities at Chickamauga Park for the number of men who died at Chickamauga Park during the encampment of the volunteer army here. The authorities of the hospital have no list, and it would seem that there is no list in Washington. The representatives of the hospital have been ransacking the undertaking establishments of this city and the records of the National cemetery for the data. According to the figures they have found there were from April 1 to date 397 deaths. Of course this list is very unsatisfactory and can not be considered official, but it appears that this is the only list obtainable.

Chicago 1898, 2 friends buried side by side

Transcription:
A Pathetic Death
Chicago, September 30.- While leaning over a casket taking a last look at the remains of a girl friend, Minnie Budelski fell forward over the casket and died instantly. The two girls, about the same age, were seldom separated. Recently Miss Graef was taken ill. Miss Budelski visited her frequently and was deeply affected by her friend's death. Today a wake was held at the Graef house and Miss Budelski attended. As she entered the semi-darkened room, she pased (sic) a moment, then slowly walked over to the casket. Reaching the casket, the girl leaned over and looked at the face of her friend, gasped and fell forward on the casket dead.
A double funeral will now take place, and the two girls, inseparable in life, will be buried side by side.

NOTE: This article seems to have been published in the NY Times on Oct 2, 1898. That article states the girls were neighbors and friends "since babyhood" and their ages were listed as 23.
