All About Olympic Badminton - 200 Miles an hour Shuttlecocks

Fxplosive Energy

With the high number of sudden stops and starts in badminton, players must be quick and agile, with very fast reflexes and tremendous stamina. Training typically focuses on "explosive energy," and on endurance in a player's thigh and calf muscles.

Badminton players' combination of quickness and power (both of which are needed in abundance when the shuttlecock comes off racquets at about 240 kilometres an hour) make for rapid changes in the complexion and tempo of a rally, from when the players are close to the net to playing deep in their courts.

The game

The game starts with a coin toss. The winner of the toss can choose either to serve or receive in the first game, or choose which end of the court he or she wishes to play in. If the winner chooses the serve, the opposition chooses which side of the court to start on. If the winner selects a court side, the other team chooses to serve or receive.

Serves are always made diagonally across the court, and the first serve of a game is always from the right-hand side. In singles' matches, if the server's score is even, he or she uses the right service court. In doubles' matches, the server switches service courts each time the team wins a rally. When the team loses a rally on its own serve, the other team serves and follows the same process.

Serves must be delivered underhand, and the shuttle must be hit below the server's waist. The receiver must stand still until the service is struck. A new rule was introduced for the Beijing Games. Previously, the entire head of the racquet had to be below the player's wrist while serving. Now, the shaft needs only to be in a downward direction to be considered legal.

Another major change is in the scoring. In Athens, games were played to the best two of three matches to 15 points (11 in women's singles), with players only able to score points on their serves. Double teams had two serves (one per player) when they had the serve. With the new rules, all events are played to the best two of three games to 21 points, with a point being scored by the winner of each rally. In doubles, only one player has the chance to serve before a change of possession. The shift in regulations has made for faster paced, shorter matches

A player loses the rally, or "faults," if the shuttle is hit out of bounds, touches the ground or the ceiling, does not go over the net, or touches a player or his clothing.

Another significant change is that coaches are now allowed to talk to their athletes in between any rallies, at an 11-point break in each game, and between each game. Under previous rules, coaching was only permitted during the breaks between each match.

The Yonex Portable Badminton Court (that is, Net) works like tent poles with stretch-string. It takes about 1 minute to put it together, and the same time to take it apart. It stands well on any surface indoors and outdoors. I didn't give it the fullest rating because the net isn't the full width of a court; judgment calls regarding a return being 'over the net' when the shuttlecock sails over the court sides must be made. The net itself is of good material, and it maintains a good posture (not much sag). This has made Badminton available for my son and me during a homeschool session for exercise and enjoyment. We use it almost daily.

Rules and etiquette

  • A player's racquet is allowed to cross over the net during the follow-through of a shot.
  • A shuttle can hit the net on a serve provided that it then lands in the opponent's service court.
  • If a shuttle gets caught on top of the net during play, a let is called and the rally is replayed. A fault is called, however, if this happens on a serve.
  • If a player swings and misses while serving, a fault is called.
  • A serve that occurs before the receiver is ready is illegal unless the receiver attempts to return the serve, despite not being ready.
  • Players are guilty of a fault if they deliberately distract an opponent by shouting or making gestures.
  • Really Fun Stuff

    Badminton banter explained

    Alley
The extension of the court by one-and-a-half feet on either side. Only used during doubles play.

    Base
A central point on the court where a singles player aims to return to after every shot.

    Bird
Another name for a shuttlecock, thanks to the feathers which are used to make them.

    Block
A block shot is just that. Usually played from near the net, your aim - to stop the shuttle passing you.

    Carry
A carry is when you 'scoop' the shuttle rather than hit it. This is also known as a "throw".

    Clear
A shot hit high and deep into your opponent's court. It can be used for defence or attack.

    Drive
A hard and fast shot, hit low over the net. Get it right and your opponent's in trouble.

    Hairpin shot
A shot hit low and close to the net. It should just clear it and drop quickly on the other side.

    Let
An official stoppage made by the umpire during play. If a let is called, the point is replayed.

    Net shot
Similar to the hairpin, but the shuttle is hit from the forecourt and not quite as close to the net.

    Rally
Forget Colin McRae and think a series of shots resulting in a point being scored.

    Shuttlecock
Also known as a bird or shuttle. They're either made from plastic or feathers.

    Smash
A shot, usually hit from near the net, that cannot be returned by you opponent.

    Wood
If the base of the shuttle hits the frame of your racquet you've hit a wood shot.
