Handball players battered, bruised

Handball is a team sport contested at international level. The aim of the game is to pass and bounce a ball into the opponent goal. The modern handball sport event started in the later half of the nineteenth century. However, the origin of the game can be traced back to the ancient period, when Greeks played a similar game. Handball has been regularly contested at the international level since the early twentieth century

Creative Ball Movement

Handball is a high-scoring game, with rules ensuring the ball is kept in motion. Players can only hold the ball for three seconds at a time and the referee can, at any time, strip a player of possession for not trying hard enough to score.

Crisp, creative ball movement is paramount in setting up scoring opportunities in handball. Since no players are allowed inside the six-metre arc outlining the goal area, the offensive team works the ball quickly around the perimeter to find a player with an open shot. Passes can be hard or feathered to teammates. That in itself is a considerable skill, given that the ball weighs about half a kilogram.

This book was instrumental in our decision to teach Team Handball to our Physical Education Majors at Butler University in Indianapolis. Besides the fact that the book spells out the sport step-by-step, there are many useful tips and drills to aid in the teaching process. In addition, I know Reita Clanton and know her to be one of the most professional, knowledgable and personable people I have met. She has done wonders for the sport, and continues to promote the learning through this text. It is a must for physical educators of all levels.

Shooting

Shooting is the highlight of team handball. Players can't stand in the goal area but they can soar over it, as long as they throw the ball before they land. So you'll see jump throws, in which players run up to the wall of defenders at the six-metre line and leap above them for a clear shot at the goal.

Still more spectacular is the fallaway throw, in which the shooter lunges through the air, twisting into a nearly horizontal position and not releasing the ball until he or she has feinted the goalkeeper once or twice and is about to hit the ground. To make things more difficult for the goalkeeper, players apply resin to their hands to help them put extra spin on their shots

Dominant Teams Today

Eastern Europe has remained strong in international competition in recent years. The Russian men defeated Sweden in the final of the men's tournament in Sydney in 2000. The victory surprised many observers and the Swedes themselves, who entered the final as the only undefeated team in the tournament. Four years later, Croatia won the men's competition at the Athens Games, with Germany taking the silver medal and Russia claiming the bronze.

Scandinavian countries have fared better in women's competition. Denmark won the women's Olympic tournament in 1996 and 2000. In Sydney, the Danish women came back from a six-goal deficit to beat Hungary in the final.

Danish women also won the gold medal in Athens, while South Korea won the silver and Ukraine claimed the bronze.
