But what is important is the quality of friends you do have. Its much more important to have ten close friends (male and female) than have 500 who are less likely to say anything positive about you.
If you have any derogatory, negative or nasty comments on your wall - delete them. Your aim, to promote excellent social proof should be to have as many positive and flattering wall posts as necessary. Nurture them and build them up.
How can you dod this? If yoiu have a wing, close friends or anybody who is also interested in game or pickup, then get them in on it. You write great stuff on his wall and he does the same. "Hey thanks for throwing that awesome house party, had a ggreat time, must do it again". "Dude, the trip to Vegas was the best time of my life, nnext is London". You get the idea. Show you have interesting experiences with your friends and HB's will be curious about you.
Even better would be if you have close HB's on your friend list. Have them collabarate with you. "It was great catching up for coffee, we must do it again". Easy.

Single/Open Relationship/In Relationship???
You approach a HB on Facebook, she accepts you as a friend. You don't know if she is single or what, so what is the very first thign you look at...even before knowing her name (apart from her photo of course)? Her relationship status!
She is single so you sarge her. She is in an open relationship so you sarge her. She is in a relationship so yes you sarge her. She is engaged so...you get the idea. Sometimes no status will show and it shouldn't make a difference...you will sarge her.
But what about your profile?
You say you're single and it's obvious why you're approaching her (at least in her mind).
You say you are in an open relationship and you're likely to be a player at best or a carrier of disease at worst.
If you're in a relationship then you are an evil bastard. Of course you could and often shold approach with the mindset of just being the fun loving guy, just out to meet people and make friends, but this will often not reciprocate in the HB's head.
So what should you do about your status?
TAKE IT OFF COMPLETELY!
That's right. Leaving it off will keep her guessing and make you interesting. The best of all worlds. Though do watch out for your other friends profiles which will all end up saying "(insert your name) is no longer listed as single". You will start getting messages asking who she is. Leave them on your wall, this is great social proof.
