Shopping Online From Home

Online shopping malls are a collection of stores online; otherwise known as internet malls or cybermalls. Within these malls are categories and within the categories are subcategories, for instance, Apparel & Fashion, Women's Clothing will be listed here and you will see a list of sites that contain, you guessed it, women's clothing. You can then click on any store listed within that category and start shopping.

Community Online Shopping Mall

While I was researching information for this lens I came across an oline mall titled Boise Online Mall. Now this mall is unique because it list only shops and business from Boise, Idaho. You may shop for real estate, vacation spots, job opportunities, business events, and muchmore. The thing to remember is these stores are open 24/7 regardless if someone is in the store or not. By creating this mall for the community they have helped local business because they not only sell from the brick and mortar store during regular business hours they also sell from the online store anytime day or night and to people that are not from that area.

Pros of Placing Your Store at an Online Shopping Mall

  1. Most online malls do the marketing, meta tags, ad words, etc. for the mall & that helps generate visitors to the mall and potentially to your store.
  2. Some online malls allow you to blog about your products and add links to your store or specific products within the mall and this allows visitors to view the blogs and connect straight to your store and/or product.
  3. While other online malls work with you on your pages, for instance, they teach you how to write ads for your pages, help you do research for keywords for specific pages, write titles, descriptions, and paragraphs. All of these excercises must be preformed in order for your site to achieve the goals you set for them such as, page rank, more visitors, more sales, etc.
  4. Some online malls give a portion of what is spent at your store or other stores within the mall to what they call "your cause". This works when a visitor comes to the mall and they decide to buy something, they are asked to choose from a nonprofit, school, or association they want to support before they start shopping. Once they make their purchase a portion of the money goes to the organization they chose at the beginning of the shopping experience.
  5. The power of networking is an effective way of prospecting customers and seeking out people who can help your business grow. By joining an online shopping mall, you will receive this help through the power of the mall, thousands of people visit these malls everyday. If only one or two visitors venture to your store from the mall, they become potential customers and that is the power of networking!

Pros of Shopping at Online Malls

  1. Save gas money, time away from home or just time in general, babysitter for children, taxes on purchases made at public malls, standing in line to pay for purchases, fighting the crowds, and the greatest one of all, you purchases are delivered right to your door.
  2. No worries about the weather, if it is raining, snowing, or too hot or cold to be outside. And no worries about getting that great parking space close to the door.
  3. If you are afraid of online identy thief, use virtual credit card numbers. These numbers are provided by credit card issuers such as Citi and Discover, and can be used only once, so even if the credit card information is captured by some other entity during the tranaction, it can not be used to complete a second purchase.
  4. Comparison shopping; you may use the online comparison shopping engine at Shopzilla.com to compare online prices to know where to go for the better pricing instead of walking from store to store and then maybe have to go back to the first store to get the better price. Which also brings us to a larger selection of stores to shop at and save. In the public malls there are usually only a handful of the stores that offer similar merchandise. And most online stores offer free shipping.
  5. Some online malls require that you become a member before shopping. Membership is generally free and can have its benefits also, such as discount codes, first to learn about new products, etc.

Cons of Placing Your Store at an Online Shopping Mall

  1. Being listed in an online mall directory is similar to bein listed in the white pags of the phone book. Unless someone is looking for what your sell specifically they may find someone else before the find you.
  2. Unless a visitor is looking for your niche specifically, they may not click on your site.
  3. Some online shopping malls take a percentage of your sales, or there is a membership fee at the beginning of the membership.
  4. Some online shopping malls don't allow you access to your customers email addresses; this is something you shoud discuss before signing on as a member. You also need to find out if you will be able to add your url to your store so customers may visit you outside the mall. You do not want to be linked with just the online shopping mall; you want your own space as well.

Cons of Shopping at Online Shopping Malls

  1. Shopping at online malls doesn't allow you to get out of the house, be around other people, ask questions, if needed. Although, if you have questions for an online store owner you may usually email or call the store owner with questions.
  2. You do have to wait on your purchase, sometimes you may have to return your merchandise if it doesn't fit or the order is wrong; then you have to wait again.
  3. As I stated in Pros of Shopping at Online Shopping Malls some of these malls require that you become a member before purchasing. This can be good and bad because in this way to aquire your email address which gives them the right to email you, at least once, to advestise their store. You do have the right to email and ask that they remove you from their email addresses.

    Lover to read other people's take on shopping malls. It the up coming thing to reduce prices and save on travel, etc. Good lens. Nice work.

    I like the luxury of shopping at home during bad weather. The only con I can think of is it is hard to buy some clothing items without trying them on first; certain unmentionables come to mind. We used to be e-Bay sellers and lost a lot of business when people were first hit with phishing scams. Very good topic. Keep up the good work. And thanks for stopping by my lens.
