About Hatching Games

There are a lot of free online games that feature hatching and raising creatures online for easy amusement. The best known is probably Dragon Cave, but here are a few others.

Most of these games involve adopting a creature, usually by collecting a graphic and then displaying it online (e.g. in Forum signatures) where people can view it or click on it. Some games require both views and click, some only clicks. Over time the creature will develop and grow as people pay attention to it.

Some of the more popular versions are below.

Mystery Egg Adoption

Mysterious eggs that hatch on a certain date...

Mystery Egg adoption is a game where you collect an egg from a page and put it on your webpage or sig. The game is free to play and the eggs are controlled by time, hatching on a set date. (The photo to the left hatched on 1st December).

The egg's code is only supplied in BBCode for Forums signatures. If you want to use it on a webpage you would need to amend this to HTML. Once the egg has hatched, you have five days to download the creature's image to your server before it is deleted.

Homepage: Mystery Egg Adoption
Requirements: Egg hatches on set date.
Limits on eggs: None, but only three are available at any one time.

Converting an egg to HTML
The code you get for your egg looks like this. The two important pieces of information I have put in bold and italic.

[url=http://pixel.alittlebitofmagick.com/egg_a.html][IMG]http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e47/trishagj/Pixel%20Perfect/12-208.gif[/IMG][/url]

To show it on a webpage you need to convert to HTML. Type the code below into your page, and replace the bold and italic pieces with the details from your egg.

<a href="http://pixel.alittlebitofmagick.com/egg_a.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e47/trishagj/Pixel%20Perfect/12-208.gif" alt="Mystery Egg adoption" /></a>

Valenth - Science and Fantasy Adoptables

Raise your creature from a testube

Example creature:

Feed Me!

Adopted from Valenth

The aim of the game is to adopt a creature and feed it until it grows. By posting it on forums and other pages, each time someone clicks on it it gets fed.

It starts in a test tube, but some high level creatures (level 1000+!) are visible on the forums to give you an idea of what they can turn into. You can get an egg without registering, but need to register on the forums to get the full facilities.

The help pages are currently being updated so this might not be the best time to start playing the game. However the forums are still active, so you should be able to get any help you need there. There is currently a 50 creature adoption limit in place, however the servers have just been upgraded so the game might develop further.

Homepage: Valenth - Science and Fantasy Adoptables
Requirements: Creatures require clicks to grow, but have no time limit.
Limits on eggs: No more than 50 creatures per player.

Magistream - New Game!

Collect eggs from the Magi's stream

A new game. Eggs must be collected from the homepage and then raised, requiring clicks in order to grow.

Users are rewarded for clicking on eggs as they receive gold which can be used to buy rarer creatures. Once again however, the game requries donations to obtains rarer creatures, so it scrapes in under the "Free" part of this - if only because there is such a variety of creatures available for free users anyway.

Virtuadopt

Example Egg:

This game allows you to adopt an egg and display it in your sig, as many do.

It is easy to play - you simply name the egg on the adopt page and are given BBCode and HTML codes to embed on webpages and signatures.

Unlike the other game shown here, Virtuadopt is in a state of transit at the moment. It is currently seeking people to help code or to sprite to replace the current sprites it uses, and the forums are down.

Homepage: http://www.virtuadopt.unl.pl/index.php
Requirements: Eggs need clicks, but there are no time limits
Limits on eggs: None known.

Note: The HTML link to the eggs will open in the same window by default. To correct this amend the code by adding target="_blank" where shown. e.g.
<a href="http://www.virtuadopt.unl.pl/feed.php?id=1866">
becomes
<a href="http://www.virtuadopt.unl.pl/feed.php?id=1866" target="_blank">

Dragon Cave

Dragon Cave is a game where you find and raise dragon eggs, and then breed them to continue the process over again.
The game is at http://www.dragcave.net

Homepage: http://www.dragcave.net
Requirements: Eggs require views and clicks to hatch and must hatch within seven days. Hatchlings then have a further seven days and require more views and clicks to mature.
Limits:A maximum of four eggs or four hatchlings at any one time.

Arvyre Pets

Arvyre Pets is a new hatching game. You can register and then select one of four eggs from the adopt site to raise. Once registered, you click on an egg and name it to raise it.

Your eggs are raised by clicks and the details are supplied with BBCode and HTML. You can click on your own egg once per day, which is useful if you don't have anywhere to display it.

The "My adoptables" page shows you your creatures, but also lets you know how many clicks it needs to level up.

Homepage: http://arvyre.com/pets/
Requirements: Eggs require clicks.
Limits: None currently known

Example egg

Note: Like virtupets, this one opens in your existing window. Add target="_blank" to the a href tag to resolve this. See the virtupets example for exact placement.

(with thanks to Kiki for the heads up on this game)
Arvrye Pets now has its own lens:
http://www.squidoo.com/Arvrye

Currently migrating servers - the game will be back after Easter!

My Mini City

In this game you adopt a city, not a creature. Each time someone visits (counted only once per day) the city grows. There are six different improvements available. Initially its just population, but security, transport etc become available over time.

Unfortunately the game only gives you the URL for clicks - you need to turn it into BBCode or HTML to embed it. However no registration is necessary, so there is nothing to stop a group of people adopting the same city. French and Spanish translation is also available.

I have set up a test city here A-Spire. Feel free to have a look around and get a feel for the game.

DNAdopt (Formerly Adoptalicious)

Formerly Adoptalicious

This game was formerly known as adoptalcious. Currently the old website redirects to this one, although how long that will last for is uncertain.

To play you need to register on the forum. They by clicking on other players pets you gain Research Points (RPs) which you can use in the shops on site to buy your own pets. This means that, unlike most games, players directly benefit by helping other people out which creates a strong community spirit.

Homepage: http://dnadopts.com/
Requirements: Level up other users' pets.
Limits: None currently known - but you have to gain RPs by helping otjher players in order to get your pets.

(with thanks to John for letting me know about this one)

Unicreatures

A free game with commercial add-ons

I am including this one because for basic users you can get your pet for free and without registering. However, like neopets, it requires donations to get special pets and bonuses. Also, to unlock all the site features you do need to register.

The pets are obtained free from the homepage, and require "visits" - in practice clicks by viewers - to gain points. Once they have enough points the owner can choose to level them up.

Homepage: http://www.unicreatures.com
Requirements: Clicks and "Training energy" (bought in stores or regenerated over time.
Limits: Registration and donations are required to access all the facilities of the game.

(And thanks to Aurora for bringing this one to my attention)

Neopets - the largest pet sim online

Virtual pets in plushies

I am not going into detail about Neopets, the best known and largest pet sim online. It is not quite relevant to this page, as it is as much about the games and shops, as the pets (e.g. I know a Neopoints millionaire without a single pet). However no page on pet sims would be complete without it.

Neopets

Accumulate Neopoints by games and competitions to raise your pet. Unlike some sims the pets cannot die unless you kill them. Registration is required to play.

Make your lens for your game

Promote a hatching game!

I can't make lenses for every hatching game, much as I'd love to. As a responsible virtual pet owner, I simply don't have time to look after all the creatures that result.

If you have a game you love, then why not make your own page for it? As I found out, it's a great way to show off your pets! (And if you let me know, then I'll add it to this page!)
