Online vocal coaching is perfect for those who are looking for a career singing on the stage, not only because you have the comfort of being able to train in your own home, but it also helps all those people who just cannot afford to pay for the whole private school/tuition scenario. What you must make sure to do is to get a good course for a good price. Brett Manning has worked with artists from Capitol, Columbia, Atlantic, Interscope, Dreamworks, Lyric Street, MCA, Epic/Sony, KMG, Word, Embassy, Gotee Records, as well as countless independent record labels. He has worked with the casts of Broadway productions of Les Miserables and Jekyll and Hyde, as well as the Broadway tour of Elton John's Aida.

He teaches voice in his Nashville studio to singers of all genres, both the undiscovered... and "the best of the best." He is also a Judge/Mentor for the new CMT music television reality show, "Can You Duet."

ABOUT ME

My name is Jackie Strong, from Sheffield in South Yorkshire, UK, and I have been in the music business as a singer/harmoniser all my life, professionally since 1973, but, in reality, performing in singalong pubs with my father from the age of about 12. I retired in late 2008 - think it was time! Apart from a stint with a rock/blues band, I sang in female harmony bands, winning some awards on the way, best up and coming, best vocal harmony, etc. I finally retired after a stint with a "mature" all-female soul band that the Wasis music agency put together called All Woman (pictured, that's me far left). I have experienced everything during my life on the road and, if there was one thing I learned above all, it was the importance of looking after the tool that brings in the cash - YOUR VOICE.

Vocal coaching is so important if only to learn the basics that will enable you to sing regularly, night after night, without having to phone up the agent to cancel due to a tired voice (not good) which comes about because it's not being used properly. I did all the bad things in the early days, losing hundreds of pounds in wages. I learned my lessons. As my career took off, I invested in some vocal coaching; very expensive back then, but well worth the lessons learned. That coaching enabled me to work night after night for years without losing my voice for the wrong reasons.

Making Your American Idol Audition Count!

Impressing the Judges at Auditions

Learning the best way to make a good impression on judges at auditions is not as hard and complicated as it might sound. While many people believe that it is impossible to succeed at auditioning for, say, American Idol, someone has to win what has become an increasingly popular show. But there will actually be a number of winners, ie those who stand out even though they didn't top the popularity stakes. How many times have you seen a performer make it just as big as the eventual winner? This has happened to a number of artists in the UK for nothing can keep real honest to goodness talent down.

Ensuring that you make the best impression possible on the judges means you need to realise that they have seen and heard just about everything. You need to figure out a way to make yourself unique and creative without seeming to go over the top. This can be the tricky part. After all, many people make the mistake of showing up for auditions determined that they are the best and are crushed when they quickly discover that they did not plan their appearance properly to show off their ability and stand a chance of winning.

If your idea of auditioning simply means showing up and auditioning, then you will find that you are unprepared to show the judges exactly what you can do. You are going to need to prepare yourself for the audition and this means not only song choice, but also being well rehearsed, dressed and made up professionally with nerves under control. If you are completely calm and know your song well, you are going to create a powerful impression. While being nervous is entirely normal, the judges like to see someone who is actually capable of rising above the nerves to perform beautifully.

Creating An Impact

The best way to fully prepare yourself for American Idol typically involves deciding to audition a year in advance. This will provide you with ample time to prepare yourself both vocally and experience wise. It would also offer the perfect opportunity to locate a good vocal coach to work with. However, never rely on time alone to guarantee the best results; after all, it will take hard work and determination to actually make the impression on the judges that convinces them you really do know what you are doing.

If you are truly serious about auditioning, you should also see about getting as much experience as possible in singing competitions or even on stage. The more you can get, the calmer you could be. This type of experience is invaluable for most singers, enabling them to conquer the nerves that cause so many contestants to forget song lyrics and stumble badly in front of the judging panel. While other competitions may not be as rewarding as American Idol, they can certainly be helpful in confirming that you are actually as talented as you believe you are.

The idea of going into an audition with some confidence really is possible. If you are unsure about exactly how to pull yourself together, you could look into learning some breathing techniques for stress management that can help you to fully cope with the audition. You will really come to appreciate the time you spent learning those techniques on the big day itself. Rather than stressing out about not being in control or remembering the words, a few deep breaths will calm you down.

Putting your best foot forward will allow you to make the biggest impact at the audition. Preparing yourself will really not be as complicated as it might seem. As long as you are willing to make the effort, you should be rewarded by seeing your confidence at its highest so you are fully prepared to give the best of yourself.

Audition Tips You Never Knew

The number of people auditioning for American Idol is phenomenal so, therefore, the competition is tough. This means that showing up to the audition fully prepared is mega important. Being prepared allows you to show yourself to the best of your ability and helps minimise some of your insecurities. Your ultimate goal must always be to walk away with one of the coveted Golden Tickets, but the reality is that they are hard to come by. This means taking as much time as possible to learn how to handle yourself during the audition to get the absolute best reception possible from the judges and, of course, the audience.

TiP 1: Anyone with ambition to succeed in a singing career should take vocal lessons. Even professional singers work with talented vocal coaches. You need to learn how to talk, how to breathe, how to control your voice and how to improve your skill level continuously. Very seldom do you ever find a professional singer who does not continue to work with a vocal coach. As an amateur, remember that this is not the time to think cheap; you need to locate a good quality vocal coach with a proven track record.

Tip 2: You should select your song months in advance and practise repeatedly. Practise until you know the words forwards, backwards and sideways. You do not want to be the one contestant who forgets the words of their song halfway through. The more you practise, the better you will obviously know the lyrics and are less likely to stress out for fear of forgetting the words. An additional benefit to being word perfect is you will be comfortable with the flow of the song and there will be ample time to select a new song in the event that your first choice proves to be a mistake.

TiP 3: Speaking of song selection, it is a good idea to have at least two numbers that you are prepared to perform on audition day. This means two complete songs, not one song that you know fully and another you know a little. You need to be able to perform a second song properly if requested. There are situations that warrant a contestant singing more than one song so be prepared.

TiP 4: Select a specific style. There are no professional musicians who are masters at all styles. There is a particular reason for this - it would be far too complicated to master every musical form. This will require you to select a specific style of music you are comfortable with and stick to it as much as possible. Do you tend to favour a folksy style of singing? Perhaps you are more comfortable with a rock feel. You might even discover that you sing classically or even in an R&B style. Regardless of the style that you are most comfortable with, you need to find it. All your singing should be focused on the same genre as much as possible. From tone to flow and song selection you are creating an entire package - make sure the package sounds perfect.

Learning The Tricks Of The Trade

So, if you're really serious about online vocal training, here are some of the things this course has to offer:

  • Most people go to a gig and don't even warm up their voice. You'll learn simple techniques that you can do on the way to your gig or in the dressing room while you're getting ready that will enable you to sing with ease from the first note.

  • How to look upon your voice as an instrument and how to use it as such.

  • When the voice is trained and used correctly, your vocal range will change immensely.

  • What goes hand in hand with this are the breathing exercises. These are imperative if you want to be able to hit a note with total ease - no straining or shouting - and hold that note for as long as needed.

  • Coping with vocal stress and breaks and how best to deal with them.

  • The diaphragm - how to use it as part of your singing.

  • As you advance with your vocal coaching and exercises, your strength and stamina will vastly improve. It's amazing, more so if you're having a good night, how draining you can feel after all the travelling to a gig, unloading and setting up all the gear, working all night, taking the gear down, loading back up and then the journey home.

    Avoid Vocal Fatigue

I've heard people going on so many times about how they have managed without any vocal coaching and, while It's true that many do cope, I believe in reality that, if you could put those people's bookings cancelled through vocal fatigue side by side with mine over a period of, say, five years, I would win hands down. Because those that knock it have never done it, they have nothing to compare. I have sung for years night after night and regularly worked in new material. It's impossible to do this with tired vocals.
