SOME VERY INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT OUR CALIBRATED OPAL DOUBLETS !

Our Opal Doublets are made with the utmost care to attention and detail in each and every one of the steps of the manufacturing process.

All our Calibrated Opal Doublets are made with both the manufacturing jeweller and hobbiest in mind; calibrated beautifully to place directly into those precious and semi-precious calibrated metal findings, for a beautifully finished jewellery piece.

Each individual item of opal used is hand-selected for it's stability, absence of any cracks and flaws, guaranteeing the opal doublet's longevity and integrity of it's gem nature and make.

With over 38 years of opal cutting and expertise, my cut and polish of our products is benchmarked to the highest quality and standard, to ensure full and complete customer satisfaction at ALL times.

The backing material we use in our range of doublets is premium quality jet black leadlight glass - it's MOHS hardness is virtually identical to that of opal, therefore very compatible.

An added benefit of using this product for backing material are the mirror polished jet black sides (matching the mirror finish of the opal face), great for that special setting allowing for a portion, or all of the sides of the doublet, to be seen.

The bonding of the opal to glass is achieved by a special blending of five different industrial strength compounds, giving rise to an incredibly strong, durable and cohesive bonding compound, second to none.

A point of note is that the enhancement of opal colour and brightness (through our doublet making process) will be maintained for the full and total life of the doublet.

ABOUT OPALS

This is an excellent Squidoo Lens about all different types of opal, opal mining etc..
Take a look for an informative read!
Gem by Gem Assoc.
"All of Nature's splendour seems to be reflected in the manifold opulence of fine Opals: fire and lightnings, all the colours of the rainbow and the soft shine of far seas. Australia is the classical country of origin. Almost ninety-five per cent of all fine opals come from the dry and remote outback deserts."

Janes Australia Homepage
The following is an extract courtesy of Janes Australia Homepage with regard to the aboriginal opal mythology of Opals:-

"Opals, like other minerals, have a spiritual value in that they represent a part, such as an organ, a Dreaming ancestor left behind as a sign of his or her presence at a particular spot. Certain minerals and stones are imbued with the powerful energy of the ancestor. The Adnyamathanha elders relate two stories about opals.
The first is about a young boy who was chasing a kangaroo. he caught it at Minipa with his wooden club, then sat down to have a meal. While he ate, he stuck his club in the ground so that it stood up. the club turned into opal stone. This story refers to the vertical or oblique planes of rock in which opal is found, one end of which is on or near the surface.

The second story is about Marnbi the bronze-winged pigeon, who threw a firestick high into the air. It landed near Cooper Pidy, an important opal mining area. When it came down and hit the ground sparks flew off in all directions. These became opals."

About OpalsOnBlack

Welcome to Opals On Black !

Opal laid its "claim" on me at a very early age with a schoolfriend giving me a tiny piece of "Maleny opal" (Sunshine Coast, Queensland,Australia), leaving me totally mesmerised by its beauty, and that then propelled me fully forward into the world of opal !

From that point on it was an expensive and rocky road to developing my individual opal skills and learning the many and varied aspects of opal.

But it was from wanting to create a different type of opal jewellery other than encased in gold/silver etc. that 30 years later led me into working with different mediums which would highlight more of the natural colour play and vibrancy of the opal itself.

"Opals On Black" Jewellery was created from this desire and my passion for opal.

As I concentrate on the finding of opal, cutting, and making of the opal jewellery, Barb, my life-partner, works the "computer-land" and all that goes with it,designing etc., produces all the beaut photos and videos, and puts together all that extra "stuff" that is needed. She is also an artist in her own right in oils, pastels & acrylics and of course... photography !

So you see, between us we make up the "team" of Opals On Black.

Thank you for taking the time to visit and read all about us!
