Why an Open Spectrum?

What I'm referring to is the government leased bandwidths and their current functionality in regards to data transmission. The current structure in the US is that specific band regimes are leased to large telecom companies. They operate in narrow bands with point to point data transmissions between objects like hand held devices and cell towers.

Tom Evslin, an open spectrum visionary, has been fighting for more efficient use of our frequency bands for some time. He applauded the suggested auctioning system by Google in this post from his blog, Fractals of Change. He's gained recent attention from the venture capitalist firm union square ventures in What Is An "Aggressive Tech Agenda"? by Fred Wilson and Open Spectrum is Good Policy by Brad Burnham.

Sick and tired of paying extra for voice and sms text message data!

This picture captures how angry I am at telecom companies for charging us extra for the right to send voice and text data over their networks (my friend Ben doesn't appear too displeased though). I got so fired up I decided to write up a blog post about it.

The short version of an already brief post: we're under utilizing our spectrum and likely to spend billions of dollars supporting telecom companies by digging up more earth to lay fiber optic cables to remote communities.

A straight forward but persuasive article I've read on the subject was authored by Ryan Singel as simply a call to action, "National Broadband Plan? Dream Big, Feds, Very Big". Here's the summary:

It doesn't matter if Genachowski proposes an open-access national fiber network like Australia announced or just $200 billion in block grants to let states or regional confederations experiment with different models. The nation's plan just needs to be visionary - like landing a man on the moon or creating a highway system.

And it needs to come with very firm, very clear rules that make sure that Americans get to run whatever apps they want, visit any site they like, feed the net content as well as consume it and do it all quickly for a fair price. And that's regardless of whether their connection is through a satellite, a 3G phone, 4G Wireless, DSL or the 'super fast National Broadband Network.'
