Neti Pot Nasal Irrigation | Allergy Treatment | Natural Sinusitis Relief, As seen On The Oprah Winfrey Show
The benefits
Proponents claim that jala neti has numerous benefits including:
- reduction of allergy problems
- improvement to breathing
- elimination of post-nasal drip
- elimination of sinusitis or chronic sinus infections
- moistening of dry nasal passages
- temporarily reduces symptoms of phantosmia
- common colds are either avoided or the duration greatly shortened
- general improvement to sinus health.
Yogic breathing practices known as pranayama are greatly enhanced by the practice of jala neti since many of them involve deep breathing through the nostrils.
Other benefits practitioners may notice:
- vision is clearer. Jala neti will clean the tear ducts enabling better cleaning and moistening of the eyes.
- improved sense of smell
- improved sense of taste
- deeper more relaxed breathing
Though no research has been done, jala neti may help some people with sleep apnea.
The Sanskrit term Jala neti refers to an ancient yogic cleansing technique, meaning literally "water cleansing," where the practitioner rinses out the nasal cavity with water (usually salted) using a neti pot. The technique is starting to be recognized by Western medicine under the term nasal irrigation.
Jala neti, though relatively less known in western culture, is a common practice in parts of India and other areas in South East Asia, performed as routinely as using a toothbrush. It is performed daily usually the first thing in the morning with other cleansing practices. It may be useful at the end of the day if you work or live in a dusty or polluted environment. When dealing with problems of congestion it can be performed up to four times a day. Jala neti can be done at a bathroom sink without a special pot using just your hands and fresh water. Wet the palms and fingers of your hands and wet the inside of your nose. After, you can maybe tilt your head back and let the moisture enter your nasal passages. Later, blow your nose into the sink. Using warm water might be helpful.
My Little Net Pot Opinions...
The plastic and porcelain neti pots generally have spouts that are shaped in a way that allow excess water to drip down your face and cannot form any type of seal. The one I use is conical shaped, which cups your nostrils completely. Porcelain neti pots can also break easily, have kids or just kinda klutzy ?.
I have found many other stainless steel models can also rust near the bottom of the spout, where it is welded.
However, this one has a rubber insert at that joint instead of welding, which prevents rusting form occurring. I have also not come across a neti pot that holds as much water as this one. This allows you to do both nostrils with one filling and one saline packet, which is what I do.
To sum it all up, this one listed directly below is by far the best neti pot on the market! I use it daily, and it makes a world of difference for my allergies and it controls my nasal polyps! Feel free to ask email me with any questions!
How to Use a Neti Pot - Simple Instructions
1. Fill the Neti Pot with warm water (not hot or cold).
2. Add about 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt.
3. Lean over the sink, tilt your head sideways and place the spout of the Neti Pot in the upper nostril.
4. Tilt the Neti Pot until the salt water solution flows thru the upper nostril, thru the sinus and out the other nostril. Be sure to keep your mouth open to breathe.
5. When the Neti Pot is empty, lean over the sink and exhale thru your nose, like you're blowing your nose.
6. Repeat with the other nostril.

Neti Pot How-To
So the wife shows me an episode of Oprah with Dr. Oz of the You series of health books. He's showing this thing called a neti pot. It's a watering can for the nose. The thing is put into one nostril and warm salt water is poured through the nostrils cleaning out the sinuses. My first attempt at video with this new camera sucked. Apparently my video software won't edit 16:9 video.
